In a letter addressed to Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, Bice urges the withdrawal of the rule, citing concerns about affordability and access to cooling options during the scorching summer months.
New Standards and Cost Analysis
The Department of Energy introduced new standards in June, aiming to reduce electricity costs associated with standard residential ceiling fans. While the proposed rule suggests that these energy conservation standards would result in significant energy savings, Bice highlights the estimated $86.6 million per year increase in equipment costs for manufacturers. On the other hand, the rule predicts annual benefits of $281.1 million from reduced equipment operating costs.
Republican Pushback and Public Comment Period
Republicans in Congress, including Bice, have voiced their opposition to the proposed rule. Bice emphasizes the extreme temperatures in her home city of Oklahoma City, reaching up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. She expresses concerns that the new regulations could limit affordable cooling measures, emphasizing the importance of accessible cooling options during the summer. The public comment period for the rule concluded on August 22.
Biden Administration’s Controversial Rules
This proposed rule is just one of many that Republicans have strongly opposed from the Biden administration. Bice references a previous ban on gas stoves, which prompted legislation to block the rule. Bice argues that such “heavyhanded regulations” restrict the free market and drive up prices for the public and small businesses. She calls for a focus on providing relief to American families instead of regulating ceiling fans.
Republican Opposition and Small Business Impact
Members of the House Small Business Committee, who are also Republicans, have joined Bice in opposing the ceiling fan rule. They argue that the rule could have a detrimental impact on small businesses involved in fan manufacturing. The committee warns that the rule may force numerous small business manufacturers to redesign their products and potentially lead to the closure of 10 to 30 percent of small business ceiling fan manufacturers.
Bice concludes her letter by reiterating her strong opposition to the proposed rule and urging the Department of Energy to withdraw it. She emphasizes the need to hold the executive state accountable and prioritize the well-being of American families.
