GOP Lawmakers Outraged Over Trump Indictment, Decry ‘Weaponization of Justice System’
Several Republican lawmakers have reacted to news about the indictment of former President Donald Trump, mostly expressing support for the former party leader. Trump and Republicans have labelled the prosecution by the Manhattan district attorney’s office as a politically-motivated witch hunt.
The grand jury in New York delivered the indictment on March 30 over Trump’s alleged involvement in the payment of hush money to adult film actress Stormy Daniels only a few weeks prior to the 2016 Presidential Election. The charges, which are currently sealed, are expected to be related to the falsification of business records regarding the said payment, which was made by Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen.
However, Trump denied any wrongdoing in the matter and said that he never directed Cohen to make any payments. Reports suggest that he later reimbursed Cohen for the said payment as part of routine legal expenses.
The House Republican Conference Chair, Elise Stefanik (R-NY), has referred to the indictment as a “dark day for America.” She added that the indictment was influenced by corrupt socialist District Attorney Alvin Bragg, accusing the radical far left of doing everything to torment Joe Biden’s main political rival in the 2024 Presidential Election.
Similarly, Representative Steve Scalise (R-LA) called the indictment a “sham” and “one of the clearest examples of extremist Democrats weaponizing government to attack their political opponents.”
Meanwhile, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), a longstanding ally of Trump, insisted that the former president is innocent and regarding the matter as a political persecution.
