GOP-controlled House passes ‘Laken Riley Act’, 170 Dems oppose
The U.S. House of Representatives Passes the Laken Riley Act
The U.S. House of Representatives made a significant move on Thursday by passing the Laken Riley Act. This bill, named after the tragic murder of 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley, mandates the arrest of illegal immigrants charged with theft in the United States.
The bill received a vote of 251-170 in favor, with all voting Republicans and 37 Democrats supporting it. However, 170 Democrats voted against it. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) expressed his disappointment, stating, “170 House Democrats just voted against the Laken Riley Act, refusing to require the detention and deportation of illegal immigrants who have been caught committing a crime.”
The “Laken Riley Act” specifically demands that the Secretary of Homeland Security take custody of aliens charged with theft in the United States.
Representative Mike Collins (R-GA), who introduced the legislation, celebrated the bipartisan support it received, saying, “IT’S OFFICIAL: The Laken Riley Act has passed the House of Representatives on a bipartisan basis. 37 Democrats joined all Republicans in support of this bill and condemning Joe Biden’s handling of our southern border!” He urged the Senate to take up the bill immediately to ensure justice for Laken and provide ICE with more tools to detain and deport criminal illegal aliens.
However, Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA) voiced concerns about the rights of illegal immigrants taken into custody, stating, “To have someone detained without that due process, I think is un-American.”
The suspected murderer of Laken Riley, 26-year-old Venezuelan Jose Ibarra, was initially detained at the southern border but was released due to overcrowding. He was later arrested in New York after being caught driving an unregistered car with a child inside. Months later, Ibarra and his brother were accused of shoplifting from a Walmart in Georgia.
In addition to mandating the arrest of illegal immigrants charged with theft, the Laken Riley Act grants state officials the authority to take legal action against the U.S. attorney general or secretary of Homeland Security for any decisions that harm the state or its residents.

What does the passage of the Laken Riley Act by the U.S. House of Representatives signify about the prioritization of public safety and the fight against crime in the country
Y addresses the issue of illegal immigrants who have been charged with theft in the United States. The bill, introduced by Representative Scott Perry (R-PA), aims to ensure that individuals who enter the country illegally and engage in criminal activities are arrested, detained, and subsequently deported.
The passing of the Laken Riley Act is a significant step towards protecting the rights and safety of American citizens. Laken Riley’s tragic murder highlighted the urgent need for action to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. By focusing on individuals charged with theft, the bill seeks to address a specific crime that often disproportionately affects communities across the nation.
The support for this bill from Republicans and a notable number of Democrats demonstrates a shared commitment to upholding the law and keeping communities safe. However, the fact that 170 Democrats voted against it raises concerns about their stance on immigration policies and their prioritization of public safety.
The Laken Riley Act, if enacted into law, would require the Department of Homeland Security to swiftly arrest illegal immigrants charged with theft and commence deportation proceedings. This strong response is necessary to ensure that those who commit crimes are held accountable for their actions, regardless of their immigration status. By implementing this legislation, the U.S. House of Representatives aims to maintain law and order and safeguard American communities.
Critics of the bill argue that it may exacerbate tensions surrounding immigration policy in the country. They claim that by singling out specific crimes committed by immigrants, it perpetuates a negative perception of immigrants as criminals. However, it is important to differentiate between law-abiding immigrants and those who engage in criminal activity. The focus of the Laken Riley Act is solely on individuals who have been charged with theft, ensuring that the law enforcement system functions effectively and respects the safety of all citizens.
The passing of the Laken Riley Act by the U.S. House of Representatives sends a strong message that the nation’s lawmakers prioritize the safety and well-being of their constituents. It reinforces the idea that criminal actions should not be tolerated, regardless of an individual’s immigration status. By addressing a specific crime and aligning it with immigration policies, the bill aims to strike a balance between protecting society and maintaining a fair and just legal system.
The Laken Riley Act will now proceed to the Senate for further consideration. Its passage in the U.S. House of Representatives serves as a crucial milestone in the fight against crime and the protection of American citizens. It is hoped that the Senate will recognize the importance of this legislation and act accordingly to ensure its enactment into law. The Laken Riley Act represents a crucial step towards a safer and more secure nation, where criminal actions committed by illegal immigrants are dealt with swiftly and effectively.
