A Republican Congressman Claims Chinese Spies Hacked His Emails
A Republican congressman said he was hacked by Chinese spies, the latest sign of aggression from the communist country.
“I thank the FBI for notifying me that the CCP hacked into my personal and campaign emails from May 15th to June 16th of this year,” Rep. Don Bacon (R., Neb.) tweeted.
Bacon claimed the spies used a “vulnerability” within Microsoft software and that it was not due to any “user error.”
“The Communist government in China are not our friends and are very active in conducting cyber espionage,” Bacon said.
The development comes as Republicans have called attention to Chinese hacking of government data, The Hill reported:
Republicans on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee launched an investigation earlier this month into recent data breaches of email systems at federal agencies such as the State Department and the Department of Commerce.
Chinese-based hackers also breached the email of U.S. Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns last month.
In their letters, the Oversight Republicans told Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo that they are requesting a briefing on the matter, saying the purpose is “to understand the extent and ramifications of the breach by Chinese hackers.”
Bacon promised in the wake of the hack to “ensure” that Taiwan gets all the weapons it has ordered “and more.”
The news comes after Chinese state media released a documentary showing soldiers preparing to attack Taiwan and promising to give up their lives in battle if needed.
