GOP Senator walks out of meeting with Zelenskyy as Ukrainian President pleads for additional funds
GOP Senator Walks Out of Meeting with Zelenskyy as Ukrainian President Pleads for More Money
The Ohio Republican remained unmoved by Zelenskyy’s pleas, standing firm in his opposition to providing further U.S. taxpayer-funded aid to Ukraine.
“Vance is one of those Ukraine skeptics who opposes giving more aid to Ukraine,” CNN’s Manu Raju revealed in a video shared by Mediaite on Tuesday.
Raju acknowledged that Vance at least attended the meeting, unlike several other senators who didn’t bother showing up.
“A handful of senators decided to skip this meeting due to their opposition to aid for Ukraine,” Raju explained.
“Zelenskyy faces a significant challenge in convincing Republicans, especially with the ongoing dispute over immigration laws to address the crisis at the southern border with Mexico,” he added. “Republicans want an immigration deal before agreeing to provide more aid to Ukraine.
“So, even as Zelenskyy makes his case, we don’t anticipate many minds being changed,” Raju concluded.
Raju asked Sen. James Lankford, who is leading the border policy negotiations for Republicans, if a deal on aid for Ukraine was possible if the border policy discussions were postponed.
“No,” Lankford responded. “We have a responsibility to the United States of America. It would mean going back to my state and saying, ‘I care about people in other countries, but I don’t care about what’s happening in my own country.’ We need to address both issues simultaneously.”
Lankford also expressed doubt that the question of additional aid could be resolved this week, suggesting it may remain an issue until 2024.
Meanwhile, Vance received praise on social media from Kevin Roberts, the president of The Heritage Foundation, who commended the senator’s courageous stance against additional funding for Ukraine.
“We need more courageous leaders like [Vance] to speak the truth about what’s really happening in Washington,” Roberts posted on X Tuesday. “Predictably, ‘The Blob’ is outraged that anyone would dare question another $60 billion for Zelenskyy.
“Proud to stand with my friend from Ohio, who knows what time it is in America,” he added.
Unsurprisingly, Vance shared Roberts’ words on his own X account.

However, not all Republican senators were as dismissive of Zelenskyy’s request as Vance.
According to reports, North Carolina’s Thom Tillis informed Jaju that the Ukrainian leader received a warm reception from the senators who attended the meeting.
Raju also mentioned that he had been informed, though he didn’t disclose his source, that Zelenskyy directly addressed concerns about Ukrainian corruption and the use of U.S. dollars for personal gain.
“Zelenskyy tackled questions about potential corruption in Ukraine and whether U.S. dollars were being misused, such as for purchasing yachts,” Raju revealed. “He directly addressed those concerns.”

What were the reasons behind GOP Senator J.D. Vance’s opposition to providing further U.S. taxpayer-funded aid to Ukraine, as highlighted by his walkout during the meeting with President Zelenskyy?
In a recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, GOP Senator J.D. Vance made headlines by walking out as Zelenskyy pleaded for increased American aid in the fight against Russia. Despite Zelenskyy’s desperate pleas, Vance stood firm in his opposition to providing further U.S. taxpayer-funded aid to Ukraine.
CNN’s Manu Raju revealed that Vance is one of the skeptics who opposes giving more aid to Ukraine. Raju also acknowledged that Vance, unlike several other senators, at least attended the meeting. A handful of senators decided to skip the meeting due to their opposition to aid for Ukraine.
The ongoing dispute over immigration laws to address the crisis at the southern border with Mexico has added to the challenge of convincing Republicans. Republicans want an immigration deal before agreeing to provide more aid to Ukraine. Consequently, Zelenskyy faces an uphill battle in changing minds among Republicans.
Raju asked Sen. James Lankford, who is leading the border policy negotiations for Republicans, if a deal on aid for Ukraine could be possible if the border policy discussions were postponed. Lankford responded negatively, emphasizing his responsibility to the United States and the need to address both issues simultaneously.
Lankford also expressed doubts about the possibility of resolving the question of additional aid this week, suggesting it may remain an issue until 2024.
In the midst of this controversy, Vance received praise on social media from Kevin Roberts, the president of The Heritage Foundation, who commended the senator’s courageous stance against additional funding for Ukraine. According to Roberts, we need more leaders like Vance who are willing to speak the truth about what is really happening in Washington.
The decision of Senator Vance to walk out of the meeting with President Zelenskyy highlights the ongoing debate within the GOP regarding aid to Ukraine. While the Ukrainian president continues to seek increased support in the fight against Russia, some senators remain skeptical and oppose further taxpayer-funded aid. This disagreement underscores the complexities of foreign aid and the various priorities that lawmakers must consider. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether any compromises can be reached or if this issue will persist until 2024.
