GOP senators demand defunding UNRWA until it proves no links to anti-Israel extremism
Republican Senators Call for Accountability in Funding for UNRWA
Republican senators are taking a stand against taxpayer funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). They are demanding that the State Department provide evidence that the organization is not connected to Hamas or involved in extremist activities against Israel.
This move comes as UNRWA faces mounting criticism on Capitol Hill. Many Republicans are urging the U.S. to cut off its funding, despite the agency’s crucial role in providing food and shelter to millions in Gaza.
Concerns over Terrorist Ties and Anti-Israel Extremism
Recent reports have raised concerns about UNRWA’s association with terrorism and its curriculum regarding Jews and Israel. A U.N. Watch report revealed that UNRWA staffers “celebrated and justified” a terrorist attack, sparking the current conflict. Additionally, Israeli news outlets discovered that sacks from U.S. and U.N. aid agencies were being used by Hamas to construct tunnels in Gaza.
In response, GOP senators have introduced legislation that would make funding for UNRWA conditional on a report from the secretary of state, verifying the organization’s lack of ties to terrorism or antisemitism. The bill also aims to overhaul UNRWA’s operations.
Stricter Requirements for UNRWA
The proposed legislation would require the United States to ensure that all employees, contractors, and beneficiaries of UNRWA have no connections to Hamas or any other Palestinian terrorist groups. It would also mandate an audit to ensure that UNRWA schools and educational materials have no association with antisemitism.
Furthermore, the bill would demand that UNRWA officially recognizes Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and other designated terrorist organizations.
Senator Bill Hagerty expressed his concerns, stating, “As evidence continues to mount that UNRWA policies and school curricula cultivate anti-Israel extremism and encourage the operations of Hamas terrorists, it is unconscionable that the U.S. continues to fuel terrorism by supporting UNRWA.”
Calls for Investigation and Clarification
Amidst these developments, a report from an Israeli journalist alleges that a UNRWA teacher held a hostage in Gaza for nearly 50 days. Senator Marsha Blackburn is demanding an investigation into the matter, giving U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield and UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini until Monday to respond.
UNRWA and the U.N. are requesting more information to support the journalist’s claim, emphasizing the need for credible evidence. They have urged the journalist to delete the post if unable to provide substantiation.
UNRWA declined to comment further on the issue.
UNRWA operates 288 schools in the Gaza Strip, and recently, one of its schools was destroyed in an explosion. The IDF claimed that Hamas had fired from inside a UNRWA school, further complicating the situation.
President Joe Biden has requested Congress to approve significant funding for humanitarian crises worldwide, including aid that would come from existing federal funding.

Why is it important for the State Department to provide evidence of UNRWA’s lack of connection to Hamas
The proposed legislation by Republican senators would impose stricter requirements on UNRWA in order to ensure transparency and accountability in its operations. It calls for a thorough review of the organization’s curriculum, textbooks, and educational materials to ensure that they do not contain any content promoting terrorism or anti-Israel extremism.
Furthermore, the bill would require UNRWA to implement enhanced oversight and monitoring measures to prevent the diversion of funds or aid materials to terrorist organizations such as Hamas. This is in response to the alarming revelation that sacks from U.S. and U.N. aid agencies were being used by Hamas to construct tunnels in Gaza.
The senators are also demanding that the State Department provide evidence that UNRWA is not connected to Hamas, as there have been allegations and concerns regarding the organization’s ties to this terrorist group. It is crucial to ensure that taxpayer funding is not inadvertently supporting or enabling terrorist activities.
Despite the important humanitarian work that UNRWA carries out, it is imperative to address its shortcomings and ensure that it operates with the highest standards of integrity and accountability. The proposed legislation is a step in the right direction towards achieving this goal.
U.S. Taxpayer Funding and the Need for Accountability
The call for accountability in funding for UNRWA stems from the belief that U.S. taxpayers should have confidence that their money is being used for its intended purpose – to provide essential assistance to Palestinian refugees. With mounting concerns over the organization’s potential connections to terrorism and anti-Israel extremism, it is essential to thoroughly investigate these allegations and take appropriate action.
Republicans argue that by demanding evidence and implementing stricter requirements, they are fulfilling their duty to safeguard taxpayer dollars and ensure that aid is being provided in a responsible and transparent manner. They believe that this is not only in the best interest of U.S. national security but also serves the interests of Palestinians who rely on UNRWA for crucial assistance.
In order to maintain bipartisan support and ensure its continued effectiveness, UNRWA must address the concerns raised by Republican senators and demonstrate a commitment to eradicating any association with terrorist groups and promoting a balanced and unbiased educational curriculum.
The Way Forward
Moving forward, it is imperative for the State Department to conduct a thorough investigation into UNRWA’s ties to terrorist organizations and evaluate its curriculum to ensure that it aligns with principles of peace, tolerance, and respect. The proposed legislation provides a roadmap for achieving these objectives and should be seriously considered as a means to promote accountability and transparency within UNRWA.
By holding UNRWA accountable for its actions, the United States can maintain its support for humanitarian assistance to Palestinian refugees while also fulfilling its obligation to protect national security interests. Ultimately, the goal should be to ensure that funding is allocated in a manner that promotes peace, stability, and a better future for all parties involved.
