New York Democrat Governor Kathy Hochul has announced an unprecedented move to combat crime in the city’s subway system. She is deploying nearly 1,000 New York ⁤National Guardsmen, state police, and Metropolitan Transportation ‌Authority (MTA)‌ cops to conduct bag‍ checks. This bold action aims to ensure the safety of subway riders and crack down on the rising⁢ underground crime wave.

The reinforcements will ⁤work ‌alongside⁤ the New ⁢York ‌Police Department (NYPD)⁣ to help patrol the city’s busiest transit stations. Governor‌ Hochul is determined to put an end to the brazen⁣ attacks on the subway system. She has unveiled a comprehensive five-point plan to tackle the growing underground crime wave.

“These brazen heinous attacks on our subway system will not be tolerated,” Hochul said as she announced a five-point plan to crackdown on the city’s burgeoning underground crime wave.

“No one heading to their job or to visit family or go to a doctor⁤ appointment should worry that ⁣the⁣ person sitting ⁢next to them possesses a deadly‌ weapon,” Hochul said. “They shouldn’t worry about whether someone’s going‌ to brandish a knife ⁤or gun. That’s what we’re going to do with these checkpoints.”

NYC Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Hochul are joining forces to implement a series of measures to ensure the ‍safety of subway‌ riders. Random bag checks will soon be conducted, and a new law will be introduced ⁢to ban individuals with a ‌history of violent transit assault from using the subway or bus system.

Mayor Adams revealed that ⁤in 2023, 38 ⁢people were arrested for 1,126 attacks on ⁤MTA workers, while last year, 542 people ‍were arrested for over 7,600 shoplifting crimes. Governor Hochul is determined to identify repeat offenders⁣ and ensure their⁣ criminal ⁣history ‍is taken into account during arrest⁤ and bail decisions.

“Basically, if you assault someone on⁣ the subways, you⁣ won’t⁢ be ⁣on the subways,” Hochul said.

“We know who they are,” Hochul⁣ said of⁢ the repeat⁣ offenders. “They’ll flag the criminal history at the time of arrest so it can be fully considered when decisions regarding charging and‍ bail⁢ are made.”

The MTA ⁢will also enhance ‌security measures by installing new surveillance cameras⁢ to ⁢protect transit staff. By the end of 2024, CCTV cameras ‌will⁢ be installed in every ‌train ‌car,⁣ further ensuring ⁢the safety of subway riders.
