Gov. Newsom Officially Ends COVID State Of Emergency After Three Years
California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, California Democratic Governor, officially ended the COVID emergency on Tuesday. This was nearly three years after he placed residents under tight lockdown orders and expanded his legal power as chief executive of the State.
Newsom was one of the first U.S. governors to declare a statewide COVID crisis on March 4, 2020. Newsom previously stated that California must maintain the emergency status in order to prevent the spread of this virus.
“California is better prepared, and that’s because we have a serious Legislature and the health ecosystem in California is second to none in the country,” Newsom said the Los Angeles Times.
Newsom’s departure comes after California’s Department of Public Health. reported More than 100,000 deaths were confirmed by the state as a result of the virus.
California currently ranks 11th as the country’s lowest COVID death rate per capita, According to The Times.
Newsom made a stay-at home order, which lasted about 16 months, under the proclamation. This order capitalized on Newsom’s authority over state regulations and laws and state funds.
Critics charge the governor with shutting down the economy, causing harm to businesses and families. Schools and companies were closed. Newsom continued the directive even after schools and businesses returned to normal life in California and other US states. Republicans have criticised Newsom for the extension of the declaration and requested that lawmakers hold a referendum to remove the order.
Republican state senator Melissa Melendez stated, while pushing for her measure last spring, that the state legislature should perform its duty to address COVID.

“We ended school years, and we shuttered businesses, and we implemented lockdowns, and we enforced remote work, and we implemented all sorts of policies and testing,” Melendez . “We have grown over the last few years. We are equipped to deal with this and this constant state of emergency is no longer necessary.”
Newsom faced criticism across the political spectrum for his extensive orders in response to COVID — from shifting positions on mask mandates and attempting to force businesses and schools to enact vaccine requirements.
Newsom and Jennifer Siebel Newsom were found naked outside their Napa Valley home at French Laundry, as COVID cases increased across the state. After advising Californians not to socialize with strangers outside of their homes, the governor was portrayed as a hypocrite by the media.
Newsom also won a recall for his governorship. The effort gained momentum due to Californians becoming increasingly tired of emergency powers during the pandemic.
Californians are fleeing Newsom’s rule in droves since 2020 when Newsom and the predominantly Left-leaning legislature closed the state down in protest at COVID.
Many Republicans claim that California’s effectively one-party system has turned California into a feudal or socialist state. This is despite high taxes already killing the middle classes, skyrocketing crime rates and rampant homelessness.
The U.S. Census Bureau released its December report reported California lost more residents than any other State in 2022. More than 300,000. This marked the third consecutive year of California’s population decline.
Census has been increasing over the last three year. Data California’s population declined by more that 500,000 between April 2020 & July 2022. The state saw nearly 700,000. Residents emigrate to Los Angeles.
California is one of the last to end the emergency
According to The Associated Press, five other states — including Delaware, Illinois, New Mexico, Rhode Island, and Texas — are still under the declaration.
Last month, President Joe Biden announced that the federal government would cease emergency COVID declarations on May 11th.
