South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem is taking action to address the migrant crisis by deploying her state National Guard to the southern border this spring.
The deployment will consist of 60 soldiers sent by Governor Noem (R-S.D.) over a period of three months. Noem emphasized that the purpose of this move is not “to facilitate an invasion,” but rather ”to stand up and stop it.”
“The border is a warzone, so we’re sending soldiers,” Noem stated in a press release. “These soldiers’ primary mission will be construction of a wall to stem the flow of illegal immigrants, drug cartels, and human trafficking into the United States of America.”
Meanwhile, Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R-Texas.) and the Texas National Guard have been actively fortifying the border with razor wire to prevent illegal migrants from crossing. This has sparked a dispute between Abbott and President Joe Biden, which escalated further due to a Supreme Court decision allowing the Biden administration to cut the razor wire along the border.
Furthermore, Democrats have called for Biden to nationalize the Texas National Guard and enforce the Supreme Court’s decision.
Noem’s decision to deploy the National Guard adds to the support Abbott received from over two dozen Republican governors in January, including Governor Glenn Youngkin (R-Va.), Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.), and Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R-Ark.).

In what ways do critics argue against the effectiveness of building a wall to address the migration issue
Oe Biden’s administration, who have criticized the use of razor wire as a deterrent. Abbott, however, believes that it is necessary to protect the state from the influx of migrants and criminal activity associated with illegal border crossings.
The deployment of the South Dakota National Guard to the southern border is another step taken by a Republican governor to address the ongoing migrant crisis. The surge in illegal border crossings has put a strain on border patrol agents and facilities, leading many states to take matters into their own hands.
Governor Noem’s decision to send soldiers to construct a wall is a reflection of the frustration felt by many Americans over the federal government’s handling of the border situation. They believe that stronger border security measures are necessary to protect the country from drug smuggling, human trafficking, and other criminal activity.
However, critics argue that building a wall is not an effective solution to the problem. They argue that it is a costly and outdated approach that does not address the root causes of migration. They believe that resources would be better spent on improving the immigration system, addressing the economic and social factors that drive migration, and providing humanitarian aid.
The deployment of the South Dakota National Guard is expected to begin in the spring, and Governor Noem has stated that they will be working in close collaboration with local law enforcement and federal agencies. The soldiers’ primary mission will be construction, but they will also be providing support to border patrol agents in their efforts to secure the border.
While the deployment of the National Guard to address the border crisis is not unprecedented, it highlights the ongoing challenges faced by border states and their governors. As the Biden administration grapples with finding a comprehensive solution to the migration issue, border states continue to take their own actions to protect their communities.
