Grandma dies in suspected DUI accident in Sylmar.
Tragic Loss: Grandmother Killed in Suspected DUI Crash
A devastating incident has left a Sylmar family in mourning. On September 8, an 87-year-old grandmother tragically lost her life when the parked car she was exiting was struck by a suspected impaired driver.
The heart-wrenching crash took place around 8:45 p.m. on Thursday in the 14000 block of Foothill Boulevard. A northbound Ford Fusion collided with the parked vehicle, causing the elderly woman’s passenger to be thrown from the car and onto the ground.
Despite efforts to save her, the woman succumbed to her injuries.
The driver of the Ford Fusion, identified as 33-year-old Juan Martinez, allegedly under the influence, continued driving north on Foothill Boulevard. He went on to collide with several other vehicles before finally coming to a stop. Martinez, who had a previous DUI, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently held on $2 million bail.
According to the victim’s son, Joel Reynozo, his mother and the other woman were returning from church when the tragic accident occurred. The elderly woman was being dropped off at home.
Reynozo recounted the horrifying moment when the crash propelled his mother out of the parked car, causing her to land on her head. Rushing outside upon hearing the collision, he discovered his injured mother.
“My mom was a giver,” Reynozo shared with KTLA5. “She always, always attended to people. She loved people. She was a great cook, an awesome cook. My mother was just … constantly helping people. My mom was old school, they don’t make ’em like that anymore.”
