Father relieved to discover daughter killed, not taken to Gaza by Hamas.
Grieving Father Relieved to Learn Daughter Killed by Hamas
A heartbroken father recently shared with CNN his immense relief upon discovering that his 8-year-old daughter had been tragically killed by Hamas terrorists. He explained that the alternative scenario, where she would have been kidnapped and taken to Gaza, would have been unimaginably worse.
Thomas Hand, an Irish volunteer who had arrived in Israel three decades ago with plans to stay only a few months, found himself never leaving. After losing his wife to cancer, he and his daughter Emily were living in the peaceful Kibbutz Be’eri on their own.
When the sirens blared on that fateful Saturday, Hand initially felt no concern until the sound of gunshots pierced the air. Frantically trying to reach his daughter, who was at a friend’s house for a sleepover, he was devastated to discover she was nowhere to be found. In a tearful interview with CNN reporter Clarissa Ward, he recounted the heart-wrenching moment he received the news of her death.

“They just said, ’We found Emily, she’s dead,’ and I went, ‘Yes,'” Hand recalled. “I went ‘Yes,’ and smiled because that is the best news of the possibilities that I knew. The best possibility that I was hoping for.”
Hand went on to explain that in the aftermath of the horrific attacks perpetrated by Hamas terrorists against Israeli civilians, he knew that his daughter was either dead or in the hands of the enemy. Given his knowledge of how Hamas treats captives, he could only hope that she had passed away to spare her from enduring their cruelty.
“She was either dead or in Gaza, and if you know anything about what they do to people in Gaza, that is worse than death, that is worse than death,” he emphasized. “The way they treat you, they have no food, they have no water.”

“She’d be in a dark room with Christ-who-knows how many people and terrified every minute, hour, day, and possibly years to come. So death was a blessing, an absolute blessing,” he concluded.
What steps should the international community take to condemn acts of violence carried out by organizations like Hamas and promote a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
G moments of searching for his daughter and the fear that she may have been taken hostage by Hamas militants.
Hand expressed his relief when he received the news that his daughter had been tragically killed instead. He explained that while the loss of a child is an unimaginable pain, the thought of her being kidnapped and taken to Gaza was even worse. The perils faced by hostages in the hands of terrorists are well-documented and the uncertainty of their fate can be unbearable for families.
This tragic event sheds light on the grim reality faced by Israeli families living near the Gaza Strip. The constant threat of violence and terrorism, perpetrated by organizations like Hamas, has instilled fear and pain in the hearts of many parents. Hand’s story is just one among countless others who have suffered devastating losses at the hands of these extremists.
It is important to recognize that the Israeli government and its people are not the aggressors in this conflict. Rather, they are defending their homeland and trying to provide a safe and secure environment for their citizens. It is unfortunate that innocent lives, especially those of young children, are caught up in the crossfire of this ongoing conflict.
Israel faces a unique challenge in defending its people against terrorist organizations like Hamas. The state has an obligation to protect its citizens from harm while also abiding by international humanitarian laws governing armed conflicts. Striking a balance between these priorities is an immense challenge that requires careful consideration and decision-making.
The international community must stand united in condemning acts of violence carried out by terrorist organizations like Hamas. The loss of innocent lives, regardless of nationality or religion, is a tragedy that should not go unnoticed. Efforts must be made to hold those responsible accountable for their actions and to promote a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
In moments of grief and tragedy, it is essential for the international community to express solidarity with the affected families. Remembering the lives lost and providing support to those left behind is a crucial step toward healing and reconciliation. The pain and suffering endured by parents like Thomas Hand should not be forgotten, and their voices should be heard in the pursuit of peace and justice.
As the world continues to grapple with the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, it is imperative to remember the human cost of violence and terrorism. The tragic fate of Emily Hand serves as a stark reminder of the immense suffering borne by innocent victims. It is a reminder that the pursuit of peace and security must be prioritized for the sake of future generations.
In conclusion, the grieving father’s relief upon learning that his daughter was killed, rather than kidnapped, underscores the immense challenges faced by Israeli families living near the Gaza Strip. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas should serve as a reminder of the urgent need for a peaceful resolution. It is essential for the international community to support those affected by violence and to work towards a future free from fear and grief.
