Gun-Free Zones, Red Flag Laws Only Make Gun Crime Worse: Economist

According to scholar, scholar, and author John Lott, two of the most well-liked gun control proposals have little to no impact on gun crime and really make the issue worse for the people they are meant to protect.

At the National Rifle Association’s’s monthly meetings and showcases in Indianapolis, Lott addressed seminar attendees, saying,” Those are the people who are affected.”

With more than 100 peer-reviewed posts and 10 books on the subject, Lott is regarded as an expert on firearms and violence. He oversaw two lectures on the efficacy of red flag laws, weapons free zones, and additional gun control measures.

He claimed that Nikki Goeser’s’s tale perfectly captures the flaws in these regulations.

” Stalked and Defenseless: How Gun Control Helped My Predator Death My Father in Front of Me” was written by Goeser. Additionally, she serves as the Crime Prevention Research Center’s’s( CPRC ), whose president is Lott.

Due to family responsibilities, Goeser was unable to attend the event where he was scheduled to speak.

Goeser ran a music company with her late father, Ben, fourteen years later. The couple had met a guy who fell in love with her and started stalking her.

Even though Goeser was authorized to have a concealed revolver, it was against the law at the time to do so in Tennessee, where she was born and raised.

Goeser’s’s sneak showed up one night while they were running their music business and shot her father seven times in front of her. The officers were aware of Goeser’s’s predicament, but the predator remained unfazed.

Goeser has reportedly said that she is unsure of her ability to stop the violence if she had her revolver, according to Lott. She is certain, however, that following the law prevented her from defending either herself or her spouse.

She was denied the chance, as her book’s’s title states, he claimed.

Goeser’s’s scenario, according to Lott, is the ideal illustration of the drawbacks of gun-free regions.

94 percent of people killings since 1950 have taken place in gun-free areas, according to data from the CPRC.

One well-known people murderer, according to Lott, provided his justification in a statement written the year before he committed the crime.

According to Lott, the 19-year-old man who killed 10 men on May 14, 2022, in a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, has been referred to as an extreme discriminatory. However, Lott claimed that the shooter described himself as an activist and eco-terrorist even though he was an outspoken discriminatory.

The shooter stated in his statement that having too few children was harming the environment for minorities, which is why he chose to target black people.

According to Lott,” Attacking in a weapon-restricted region may reduce the chance of human pushback.” Areas with strict gun laws are also great places to attack, as are” areas where CCW ] concealed weapons” are outlawed or prohibited.

According to Lott, the position should think about ways to encourage the legal carrying of firearms rather than disarming individuals. He supports arming teacher, for instance, when it comes to school killings.

He claimed that 20 says now permit faculty to carry weapons, with some of the most reassuring laws coming from Oklahoma, Utah, and Ohio. A school is a more difficult goal from the perspective of the shooter because they are unsure of which, if any, teachers are carrying weapons.

Lott remarked,” You have literally hundreds of colleges all over the country with armed teacher.”

He claimed that he is unaware of any unintentional shootings or incidents involving an armed speaker that have occurred at a college during class hours to date. Additionally, there haven’t been any murders at those school. He claimed that this is a tried-and-true strategy.

We don’t have to speculate, Lott said.

Most of the time, the sniper is aware that they will probably be killed or captured. In truth, Lott claimed that the majority of people guns he has studied left works that made it clear they intended to commit suicide by killing as many people as possible.

He claimed that in Tennessee, carrying a hitman in an area that is off-limits carries the death penalty of six years in prison.

Lott ponders how much of a barrier an additional six years may be given the possibility of the death penalty or life in prison for the murder of many people if they are captured alive.

It seems as though there is no punishment for these men, he said.

Death Doesn’t Usually Follow Depression

According to reports, Goeser’s’s psycho had displayed psychotic behavior and was thought to be mentally ill. He kept stalking Goeser by sending her letters of fancy while she was incarcerated. His release date has been postponed to 2028 because he was found guilty of felony stalk by email.

The possibility of the stalker’s’s transfer, according to Lott, raises a different issue.

Goeser described her extreme pain and depression following her husband’s’s murder in her book. She claimed that there were times when she was unsure of her ability to hold on.

But Lott countered,” That doesn’t imply that she was depressive.”

According to him, Goeser could have been disarmed if someone in her career believed she might try to harm herself or commit murder under red flag laws, also known as extreme danger safety purchases.

Red flag legislation are present in 19 states and the District of Columbia. These enable members of the family, the household, law enforcement, or all three to approach a judge and ask for the confiscation of an individual’s’s firearms in order to stop them from harming themselves or others.
