Washington Examiner Editor-in-Chief: Biden and Democrats Blink on Debt Ceiling

A Momentous Occasion

According to Washington Examiner Editor-in-Chief Hugo Gurdon, President Joe Biden and the Democrats have blinked on the debt ceiling. Gurdon spoke with Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo on Wednesday on Mornings with Maria, stating that this is a momentous occasion. In the past, the public has always blamed Republicans for debt ceiling crises. However, this time, it looks like the Republicans are the ones who have taken action.

Biden Blinks

Gurdon notes that Biden held out for 97 days and refused to discuss the ceiling in the same breath as spending. However, that changed last week. “He blinked, and it was interesting because he blinked by saying there are certain things like the student loan forgiveness and other things which he would take off the table, such as the Inflation Reduction Act, and that implied that there were certain things which were on the table which he was willing to negotiate about,” Gurdon said.

Republicans Gain Ground

With the ground that Republican lawmakers have gained, Gurdon alluded to comments from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) that a deal could be made by the end of the week. Biden’s departure for a visit to the Far East could help that deal come to fruition, according to Gurdon. “He’s going to be away, and each side has appointed people to conduct their negotiations,” he said. “When you don’t have the top politicians … you just got the functionaries, the low-level people, what they’re going to do is try and come to a deal.”

Conclusion

It’s clear that the Democrats and President Biden have blinked. They are discussing spending cuts, and they could have been doing this for the last three months. This is a significant moment in American politics, and it remains to be seen what the outcome will be.
