Haley open to labeling China as currency manipulator.
Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley is not afraid to take a strong stance against communist China. In a recent press gaggle, she expressed her openness to designating China as a currency manipulator.
When asked about the conditions for China’s normal trade status, Haley emphasized the fentanyl crisis in the United States. She believes that threatening China with the removal of its normal trade relations status should be enough to make them stop perpetuating the fentanyl crisis. Haley’s top priority is to prevent the facilitation of fentanyl, which is a leading cause of death among Americans.
“I have called out China on everything from stealing intellectual property to genocide,” Haley stated. “We need to let China know that we’re on to them and hold them accountable.”
Currency Manipulator
When asked if she would label China as a currency manipulator, Haley explained that she would first end China’s normal trade status and then consider designating them as a currency manipulator.
“There’s no doubt that they are trying to do that,” Haley said, referring to China manipulating its own currency. ”But it’s up to China on how they respond.”
Ending normal trade relations with China would require Congress to pass a measure. This would mean no more low tariffs and other trade advantages. The United States previously labeled China a currency manipulator in 2019, only to reverse course a year later.
Federal law requires the Treasury secretary to consider whether countries manipulate the exchange rate for unfair trade advantages.
The Fentanyl Crisis
Haley has been vocal about the fentanyl crisis in the United States. She believes that China plays a significant role in this crisis and has called for sanctions against China.
“Most of the fentanyl that comes into this country illegally from Mexico—a lot of it from Chinese supplies to Mexico—comes through China,” Haley explained.
