Haley Stevens launches run for Michigan Senate
Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) has officially entered the race for Michigan’s Senate seat in the upcoming 2026 midterms, following the retirement of Sen. Gary Peters. Stevens joins a competitive Democratic field that includes state Sen. Mallory McMorrow and former Wayne County health director Abdul El-Sayed. In her campaign declaration, Stevens emphasized the importance of Michigan’s auto industry and criticized former President Donald Trump’s policies, which she claims threaten local jobs. She has a history of success in elections, having flipped a House seat in 2018 and narrowly winning reelection in 2020. Despite her candidacy, it’s uncertain if Democratic leadership will endorse a specific candidate ahead of the primary. Meanwhile, on the Republican side, former Rep. Mike Rogers is making another bid for the Senate, and Tudor Dixon, who lost the 2022 gubernatorial race,is also considering a run.
Haley Stevens launches run for Michigan Senate
Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) announced her campaign for the open Michigan Senate race in the 2026 midterm elections.
Stevens joins an already crowded Democratic field with state Sen. Mallory McMorrow and former Wayne County health director Abdul El-Sayed also launching bids to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters.
In her announcement video, Stevens highlighted the state’s auto industry while focusing on President Donald Trump. She promoted her time working in former President Barack Obama’s administration to bail out the auto industry, showing a clip of Obama portraying her as a “critical part of my team that helped the American auto industry come roaring back.”
“But Donald Trump has a much different plan for Michigan. His chaos and reckless tariffs are putting tens of thousands of Michigan jobs at risk,” Stevens said. “Donald Trump says he couldn’t care less if auto prices rise. Well, as someone who spent my time in Congress fighting for Michigan jobs, Michigan families, and Michigan workers, I couldn’t care more.”
Stevens has previously won competitive races. She flipped a House seat in 2018 and narrowly won reelection in 2020. In 2022, she beat former Rep. Andy Levin (D-MI) in a primary after redistricting cost Michigan a House seat.
SENATE DEMOCRATS SEE HOPE FOR MIDTERMS WITH 2024 DOWNBALLOT RESULTS
It is unclear if Democratic leadership will endorse a candidate in the race, as it is still far from the August 2026 primary. Stevens met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) earlier this month, according to CNN. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) endorsed El-Sayed.
On the Republican side of the race, another primary is emerging. Former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI), who unsuccessfully ran for the Senate in 2024, announced another bid. Republican Tudor Dixon, who lost the 2022 governor’s race to Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer by 10 points, is also considering a run for Senate or governor of the state.
