Hallmark Media CEO, champion of ‘diverse and inclusive’ storytelling, to step down.
Hallmark Media CEO and President Wonya Lucas to Step Down
Hallmark Media CEO and President Wonya Lucas will be stepping down from her position at the end of the year, marking the end of her successful three-year tenure. During her time as CEO and president, Lucas has played a pivotal role in expanding the company’s storytelling by introducing more diverse and inclusive storylines and characters.
Despite her departure from the CEO role, Lucas will continue to contribute to the company’s growth and success as a member of Hallmark Media’s board of directors, according to a press release.
Lucas Reflects on Her Accomplishments
“I am honored to have led this company and am tremendously proud of the progress we’ve made by creating an evolved entertainment experience that inspires meaningful, emotionally connected moments for our audiences,” said Lucas. She expressed her deep passion for the Hallmark brand and her commitment to guiding Hallmark Media’s future in a more strategic capacity.
Mike Perry, the president and CEO of Hallmark Companies, commended Lucas for her exceptional leadership and announced that he will be working closely with her and the executive leadership team to ensure a smooth transition.
“I’m grateful for the important work she has done to bring the expansive foundation of the iconic Hallmark brand to life, and I am fortunate that her insights will continue to positively impact the future of the business,” said Perry.
Changes and Criticisms in the Hallmark Channel
Lucas’s departure comes at a time when the Hallmark Channel has faced criticism from conservatives due to its embrace of progressive values. In 2019, the channel faced backlash for withdrawing a wedding advertisement featuring a lesbian couple kissing at the altar. However, they later reversed this decision in response to the public outcry.
In 2022, one of the Hallmark Channel’s leading actresses, Candace Cameron Bure, signed a deal with GAC Media, a conservative alternative to the Hallmark Channel. Bure will now produce “faith-filled” content, aligning with her personal values and the preferences of her family.
“I’m very excited to develop heartwarming family and faith-filled programming and make the kind of stories my family and I love to watch,” Bure expressed her enthusiasm regarding the new deal.
