Conservative hardliners vow to oppose funding bills unless demands are fulfilled.
Conservatives Demand Action on Appropriations Bills
Over 20 conservatives, including House Freedom Caucus Chairman Scott Perry (R-PA) and Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), have sent a letter to Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) outlining their demands for the upcoming appropriations bills. In the letter, they make it clear that they will vote against the bills if their requirements are not met.
Strong Stance on Spending
“We therefore write to inform you that we cannot support appropriations bills that will produce a top-line discretionary spending level barely below the bloated FY 2023 level (already grossly increased by the lame-duck omnibus spending bill we all vehemently opposed a mere six months ago) and effectively in line with the cap set by the debt ceiling deal that we opposed and was supported by more Democrats than Republicans,” the letter reads.
The conservatives insist that the appropriations measures must adhere to fiscal 2022 levels without using reallocated rescissions to increase discretionary spending. They also demand that all 12 appropriations bills be reported out of committee before any floor consideration takes place.
Rejecting Omnibus Measures
Furthermore, the signees of the letter urge leadership to publicly reject the possibility of an omnibus appropriations measure or a supplemental Ukraine appropriations bill. They are determined to hold their ground and vote against the bills if their requests are not met.
Commitment to the American People
“We intend to keep the promises we made to the American people to cut federal spending, reduce the size and scope of the woke and weaponized federal bureaucracy, and ensure their security,” the letter reads. “And we stand ready to work with you to use the power of the purse to force the President to the table to work with us to make good on these promises.”
The conservatives also express their willingness to consider other policy changes that address the spending crisis, such as securing the border and restricting the President’s ability to abuse executive power.
