Harris calls for ‘civil dialogue’ as Trump blames her rhetoric – Washington Examiner
In a recent address, Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized the need for “civil dialogue” in political discourse, particularly in light of a recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. During her appearance on a Spanish-language radio show, Harris condemned all forms of political violence and expressed gratitude that Trump was unharmed, urging for a conversation focused on differences rather than hostility. However, many Republicans, including Trump himself, criticized her calls for civility as hypocritical, arguing that her rhetoric has contributed to a culture of violence. Trump accused Harris’s statements of exacerbating political tensions and labeled them as part of a broader pattern of harmful rhetoric. The situation underscores the contentious atmosphere leading up to the upcoming elections, as both parties grapple with the implications of their public discourse on safety and political violence.
Harris calls for ‘civil dialogue’ as Trump blames rhetoric for attempted shooting
Vice President Kamala Harris is calling for “civil dialogue” even as Republicans say her own rhetoric played a role in the second assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump.
“Political violence of any kind is unacceptable, and I strongly condemn it,” Harris said Tuesday on the Chiquibaby radio show. “I’m grateful that he is OK, but we all have to stand up and say enough of this kind of approach. We have to have civil dialogue and discourse. We have to be able to talk through our differences.”
Harris appeared on the Spanish-language program, which runs on more than 100 radio stations, to make her case to Hispanic voters. But her calls for civil dialogue are hypocritical, according to many Republicans, including Trump.
“The Rhetoric, Lies, as exemplified by the false statements made by Comrade Kamala Harris during the rigged and highly partisan ABC Debate, and all of the ridiculous lawsuits specifically designed to inflict damage on Joe’s, then Kamala’s, Political Opponent, ME, has taken politics in our Country to a whole new level of Hatred, Abuse, and Distrust,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
“Because of this Communist Left Rhetoric, the bullets are flying, and it will only get worse!” he added.
Trump was unharmed as Ryan Wesley Routh hid out at Trump’s Florida golf course with a rifle and waited for him for several hours Sunday afternoon. The alleged assassination attempt, the second against Trump since July, was thwarted when Secret Service agents intervened.
In one post on X, Routh claimed that “democracy is on the ballot and we cannot lose,” echoing a phrase Harris has used repeatedly on the campaign trail.
Others within Trump’s orbit have made a similar case that rhetoric accusing Trump of being a dictator or a threat to the nation will lead to violence.
“I expect him to be safe,” Trump’s son Eric Trump said on Fox News’s Hannity. “This country expects to have democracy, and then I get to hear Kamala Harris at a debate saying that that man right there, who’s the most brave person I’ve ever met, is a threat to democracy? You know, Sean, the bullets are only going one way. It’s really interesting how that works.”
Democrats have called for better protection for Trump in the wake of the assassination attempt, though most have not committed specifically to tone down political rhetoric.
President Joe Biden said Monday morning that the Secret Service needs more assistance in the aftermath of the second attack on Trump.
“One thing I want to make clear is: The service needs more help. And I think Congress should respond to their need,” he told reporters.
