Harris campaign seeking to limit celebrity appearances at DNC: Report – Washington Examiner
The article discusses Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign strategy for the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC), which is set to take place in Chicago starting August 19. The campaign is aiming to limit the number of celebrity appearances in order to avoid the perception of the event being a gathering of the “Hollywood liberal elite.” This approach marks a shift from previous conventions that featured many high-profile celebrities.
Adrienne Elrod, a senior spokeswoman for the Harris campaign, emphasizes the importance of connecting with voters in a highly personalized media environment, while acknowledging that celebrities can engage new voters by authentically speaking to their fans. While musician John Legend is expected to attend the DNC, it is unclear whether he will perform or give a speech.
The article contrasts this with the recent Republican National Convention, which included appearances by celebrities such as Hulk Hogan and Amber Rose. Harris’s campaign is focusing on a more selective approach to celebrity involvement at the DNC.
Harris campaign seeking to limit celebrity appearances at DNC: Report
Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2024 campaign is seeking to avoid overstuffing the Democratic National Convention with celebrities to avoid making it seem like a “Hollywood liberal elite” event.
The four-day event, scheduled to begin Aug. 19 in Chicago, will be selective over which celebrities it chooses to invite. The report comes after the party has had a history of doing events with major celebrities, including one in June with actors George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and Jack Black while President Joe Biden was still seeking reelection.
WHO IS TIM WALZ? MEET HARRIS’S PICK FOR VICE PRESIDENT
“We are living in the most personalized media environment ever, so it’s crucial we are leveraging the unparalleled excitement around this historic ticket by doing everything we can to break through to the voters who will decide this election,” the Harris campaign’s senior spokeswoman Adrienne Elrod told TMZ.
Elrod also stated that celebrities “bring new voters into the fold” in a manner that only they could by “speaking authentically” to their fans.
The outlet has reported that musician John Legend is set to visit the DNC. However, it is not yet known if he will be delivering a speech or performing at the event.
The Republican National Convention, held last month, also saw a few celebrities partake in the event, including wrestling icon Hulk Hogan and model Amber Rose.
The Democratic Party’s move to limit the celebrity appearances at the DNC comes after Harris selected Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) as her 2024 running mate, with the two certified as the party’s 2024 presidential ticket this past week. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) praised Harris’s pick as a uniter for “not just the Democratic Party, but for the entire United States.”
With the DNC coming up shortly, a few Democratic senators are opting out of the event, all of whom are in hotly contested seats in the November elections. They include Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Jon Tester (D-MT), and Jacky Rosen (D-NV). Rosen did attend a Harris-Walz rally in Las Vegas on Saturday.
