Harris caps 40-year cycle of Democratic lawyer-candidates – Washington Examiner
The article discusses the trend of Democratic presidential candidates being predominantly lawyers and the significant financial support they receive from the legal profession. It highlights that during the 2016 election, Hillary Clinton received $17.74 from lawyers for every dollar given to Donald Trump, and in 2020, Joe Biden garnered $5.61 for each dollar Trump received. This pattern is expected to continue in the upcoming election, with Vice President Kamala Harris, also a lawyer, likely to receive substantial contributions from legal offices. The piece emphasizes the ingrained relationship between Democratic candidates and the legal community in terms of fundraising.
Harris caps 40-year cycle of Democratic lawyer-candidates
There is nothing lawyers like more than a lawyer-presidential candidate, which is why Democratic nominees for president are always awash in donations from legal offices.
In 2016, for example, lawyer Hillary Clinton and Democrats received $17.74 in donations from lawyers for every $1 given to former President Donald Trump. In 2020, it was $5.61 to President Joe Biden for every buck to Trump.
And it is likely to be similar this year, according to an analysis from Mark Sauter of Need to Share News. He said Vice President Kamala Harris continues a 40-year line of Democratic presidential nominees who are lawyers, starting with Walter Mondale.
He found that Republicans appear to turn their noses up to lawyers, nominating mostly businessmen and politicians. The exceptions were the late Sen. Bob Dole in 1996 and Mitt Romney in 2012.
“Put another way, 100% of Democratic presidential nominees since 1984 have been lawyers, compared with approximately 18% of Republicans. The trend holds for vice presidential nominees: Every Democrat nominated for vice president since 1984 has also been a lawyer, except [Gov.] Tim Walz [D-MN],” Sauter said.

Lawyers have already given Harris about $27 million, the analysis said.
Of course, it’s hard to walk far in Washington, D.C., without bumping into a lawyer, either on K Street or in Congress, where 175 are lawyers.
