Harris heads to Africa in diplomatic test as US-China relations appear frayed

Vice President Kamala Harris is heading to Africa on Saturday with stops scheduled in Ghana, Tanzania and Zambia during her week-long tour of the continent. This trip comes as reports have been swirling about President Joe Biden‘s unhappiness with her performance.

Harris, who is traveling with her father Doug Emhoff, is expected to arrive on Sunday in Accra, the capital of Ghana.

She intends to talk about food security, local politics, climate change, and economic progress. Harris revealed to investigators earlier this month that she intended to concentrate on” climate adaptation and resiliency” in Africa.

She responded that she had been” bringing in experts” and” reading a lot” when reporters questioned her on Friday about how she was getting ready for her first trip to Africa. She expressed confidence in” what the association may create” between the United States and Africa.

Harris will spend three evenings in Ghana, two in Tanzania, and one in Zambia on his path. In order to celebrate the 1998 bombing of the U.S. Embassy in the capital of Tanzania, she intends to give a speech, view an Accra recording studio, travel to the famed Cape Coast Castle, and erect an honorary wreath.

This holiday will serve as a sample of Vice President Harris’ capacity to support the diplomatic efforts of the Biden administration and will strengthen her credentials in foreign policy. President Biden reportedly expressed his displeasure with her failure to” rise to the occasion” through former private White House individuals.

Due to [ a ] fear of messing up ,” one former White House official said,” I don’t think the president sees her as someone who takes anything off of his plate.”

Harris’ well-publicized trip to Africa highlights the Biden administration’s diplomatic efforts to combat the expanding Chinese authority there.

China has been actively courting African countries for their resources and helping build infrastructure and provide economic incentives in exchange. The country recently built two state-of-the-art international airports and launched a hydropower station in Zambia.

Zambia is a significant exporter of natural materials, which are essential to China’s expanding economic aspirations.

The leader of Zambia’s Socialist Party, Fred Mmembe, questioned why Harris was traveling.

They are not pursuing politics or human rights in Africa. They are pursuing their own economic and geopolitical interest. Mmembe remarked,” It’s for them, not for us.”
