Harris secures prominent Latino civil rights group’s first-ever endorsement

The nation’s oldest and largest Latino civil rights organization, the League of United Latin American Citizens, has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president in a historic first for the group.

The executive board of LULAC’s political action committee voted unanimously to endorse Harris and her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), on Friday, the organization announced in a press release.

It marks LULAC’s first endorsement of any presidential candidate since the civil rights group was founded in 1929.

“Today, we are proud to endorse Kamala Harris and Tim Walz because of the real issues facing Latino communities and all Americans across the nation; we can trust them to do what is right for our community and the country,” said Domingo Garcia, the LULAC Adelante PAC chairman and past LULAC national president.

“The choice in this election is clear: Donald Trump and Project 2025 would bring another four years of fearmongering, division, and disrespect and demonizing of Latinos,” Garcia added. “Vice President Harris has proven herself a stalwart ally and advocate of the Latino community throughout her career and is the right choice for the continued prosperity of Latinos in the United States and the future of our country.”

The endorsement comes as Harris aims to win back Latino voters after polls showed their support for President Joe Biden slipping in the months before he dropped out of the 2024 presidential race.

LULAC’s local chapters will work to mobilize voters in five battleground states: Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Members of the group’s leadership will join Harris and Walz on the campaign trail Saturday in Nevada to announce its endorsement.
