Vice President Kamala Harris dodged answering how she voted on Proposition 36, a tough-on-crime measure on California’s ballots.

Harris made her career as a progressive Democrat, earning the distinction as one of the most liberal senators in recent history. Her 2024 campaign has seen her take a more centrist approach, largely avoiding discussions of some of her past positions. This was illustrated on Sunday when she avoided answering how she voted on the tough-on-crime Prop 36.

Speaking with reporters in Michigan on Sunday, she said that she wouldn’t reveal her vote because it was just days before the election.

“So I have my ballot, it’s on its way to California, and I’m going to trust the system that it will arrive there, and I am not going to talk about the vote on that, because, honestly, it’s the Sunday before the election, and I don’t intend to create an endorsement one way or another around it,” she responded, when asked how she voted.

Prop 36 would strengthen penalties for certain drug and theft crimes. Though unpopular among progressive Democrats, it is overwhelmingly popular among Californians.

Republicans have focused heavily on crime during the 2024 campaign, portraying Harris and the Democrats as too soft on crime. They have particularly focused on crime from migrants, which they try to directly connect with the Biden-Harris administration’s border policies.

She’s spending the day campaigning in Michigan, where she’ll visit black-owned businesses and hold a rally on the campus of Michigan State University in Lansing.
