Harvard University President Claudine Gay to Remain in Role Despite Controversy
The college’s executive board commented on the decision, saying in a statement, “Our extensive deliberations affirm our confidence that President Gay is the right leader to help our community heal and to address the very serious societal issues we are facing.”
The board acknowledged Gay’s mistakes in the handling of anti-Semitism on the campus saying, “So many people have suffered tremendous damage and pain because of Hamas’s brutal terrorist attack, and the University’s initial statement should have been an immediate, direct, and unequivocal condemnation.”
“Calls for genocide are despicable and contrary to fundamental human values. President Gay has apologized for how she handled her congressional testimony and has committed to redoubling the University’s fight against antisemitism.”
The decision comes after many calls for Gay to resign from the position following her highly scrutinized appearance on Capitol Hill last week. During the hearing, she refused to agree that calling for the genocide of Jews is considered harassment.
Additionally, billionaire hedge fund alumnus Bill Ackman, has been outspoken of relieving Gay of her duties. He said Harvard’s board made the decision because they did not want to be seen as giving into his request.
Gay’s academic work has also been criticized with calls of plagiarism recently.
The Harvard president had paraphrased or quoted almost 20 authors that included two of her Harvard University colleagues, without proper attribution in four of her publications. In at least 10 instances, Gay used full sentences and entire paragraphs with minor changes.
The Harvard board also said that they did not find any violations from Gay when it comes to her writing.
“While the analysis found no violation of Harvard’s standards for research misconduct, President Gay is proactively requesting four corrections in two articles to insert citations and quotation marks that were omitted from the original publications,” the statement continues.
Furthermore, at least 570 professors signed a petition pleading with Harvard’s board not to fire the university president.
