House Chair accuses Harvard of hindering Congressional anti-Semitism probe, threatens to cut federal funds
Harvard’s Federal Funding at Risk Amid Anti-Semitism Probe
Harvard University is facing a critical moment as it jeopardizes over half a billion dollars in federal funding by obstructing a congressional investigation into campus-wide anti-Semitism. Rep. Virginia Foxx (R., N.C.), head of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, is leading the charge in scrutinizing Harvard and other prestigious American universities for their inability to address the surge of anti-Jewish incidents on campus.
“Making Students Safe Should Be the Priority,”
“The ultimate thing is obviously, trying to hold back some of their money if they’re just not going to make the students safe,” Foxx emphasized, hinting at the severe consequences Harvard could face due to its non-compliance with the investigation.
Earlier this year, Foxx’s committee issued a subpoena to Harvard after the university delayed producing essential documents regarding its management of widespread anti-Semitism following a significant attack on Israel. Despite repeated requests, Harvard has continuously impeded the probe by providing heavily redacted documents, prompting Foxx to describe the situation as “really shameful.”
Foxx raised concerns about Harvard’s motivations, questioning whether it’s arrogance, ineptness, or indifference guiding the university’s actions amidst the ongoing investigation. She stressed that Harvard cannot expect the inquiry to fade away and must address the issues head-on.
This recent development, shared in an interview with the Free Beacon, signals the potential repercussions that Harvard and similar institutions could face, including the loss of federal funding if they fail to combat anti-Semitism effectively.
The committee’s actions have garnered support from Rep. Jim Banks (R., Ind.) and other House Republicans, who advocate for a stringent approach towards universities neglecting to curb anti-Semitic sentiments on their campuses.
New Legislation on the Horizon
Foxx also hinted at potential legislation that would compel universities to implement Title VI of the Civil Rights Act more rigorously, particularly focusing on preventing discrimination based on race and religion.
Harvard, as well as other institutions like MIT and the University of Pennsylvania, have come under scrutiny for their alleged violations of Title VI, allowing anti-Israel events that jeopardize Jewish students’ safety.
Amidst these challenges, Foxx remains unwavering in her commitment to addressing anti-Semitism on college campuses and ensuring that universities uphold the rights of all students, regardless of their background.
