Hawaii fire: One fire in West Maui fully contained as death toll reaches 80.
Maui County Officials Confirm Containment of Wildfire
Exciting news emerged late Friday as Maui County officials announced that one of the four devastating wildfires had been successfully contained. The fire in Ka’anapali, a small community with a population of just over 1,000 people, was extinguished by 6:10 p.m., bringing a glimmer of hope to the affected residents.
Access to the west Maui area is currently restricted via Ma’alaea and Waihe’e due to a second fire located just south of Ka’anapali. However, there is some positive news amidst the chaos, as cellphone service in the area has significantly improved, providing a lifeline for those affected.

The Ka’anapali fire had been raging near a county fueling station, which had been set up to distribute much-needed fuel to approximately 400 vehicles. An estimated 3,000 gallons of gas and 500 gallons of diesel were prepared for distribution before the operation began. However, county officials have confirmed that no fuel will be distributed on Saturday. Firefighters are tirelessly working to extinguish flare-ups and contain fires in Lahaina, Pulehu/Kihei, and Upcountry Maui.
As a result of these efforts, Honoapiilani Highway is now open for evacuees leaving Lahaina. However, it is important to note that the town is currently barricaded, and officials strongly advise locals to avoid the area due to the presence of toxic particles.
The devastating impact of these wildfires is becoming increasingly apparent, with the death toll reaching 80 as of Friday. This tragedy is beginning to rival the 2018 Camp Fire in Paradise, California, which claimed the lives of 85 people and stood as the deadliest wildfire in the past century.
Amidst the chaos, approximately 1,418 individuals have found refuge in various makeshift emergency evacuation shelters. These include the War Memorial Gymnasium, Hannibal Tavares Community Center, Maui High School, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Maui Lani, Kings Cathedral Church, and Grace Bible Church.
According to the county’s latest update, the Lahaina fire is currently 85% contained, the Pulehu/Kihei fire stands at 80% containment, and the Upcountry Maui fire is at 50% containment.
