Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii erupts after 3-month break.

Another Eruption Detected at Kīlauea Volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island

Exciting news from Hawaii’s Big Island! The ⁣Kīlauea volcano has erupted once again, prompting the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to raise its volcanic alert level from “watch” to “warning.”

This marks the third eruption of the year for Kīlauea, following previous eruptions in ‍January and June. The name Kīlauea means “much spreading” in Hawaiian, which perfectly captures the awe-inspiring power of this volcano.

The ⁢eruption occurred on September 10th at around 3:15 p.m. local time. The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) reported that it started within the Halemaʻumaʻu crater and the eastern part of Kīlauea’s summit caldera, both located within the magnificent Hawaii⁤ Volcanoes National Park.

According to the USGS, the eruption was preceded‍ by “a period of ⁣strong seismicity” and “rapid uplift of the summit.” Fortunately, the eruption is contained within the national park and poses ⁢no threat to nearby communities.

Webcam imagery captured the mesmerizing sight of fissures at the base of Halemaʻumaʻu crater generating lava flows on the surface ‌of the‌ crater floor, showcasing ‌the raw⁢ power of nature.

“The opening phases of eruptions are dynamic. Webcam imagery shows fissures⁤ at the base of Halemaʻumaʻu crater generating⁢ lava flows on the surface of the crater floor,” it said in a statement.

The USGS has raised the volcano alert level to “warning” and changed the aviation color code to “red,”‌ indicating that a major volcanic eruption is either imminent or suspected, with ⁤hazardous activity both on the ground⁣ and in the air.

As the eruption ‍progresses, the USGS will reassess the hazards associated with the eruption. They are in constant⁤ communication with the national park to ensure the safety of visitors and park personnel.

While nearby‍ communities are ⁤not at risk from lava flows, volcanic particles and fumes could potentially cause breathing problems. Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency (EMA) has issued a warning about the potential respiratory hazards.

“However, eruptions emit volcanic particles⁣ and gases, which may create breathing problems for people⁤ exposed,” EMA stated on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

Kīlauea, the second largest volcano in Hawaii, has been quite active in⁤ recent years. It erupted from September 2021 until December 2022, causing significant destruction. In December, Hawaii’s biggest volcano, Mauna Loa, also ⁣joined in the eruption ‍on the Big Island.

After a⁤ brief pause, Kīlauea resumed erupting in January, with the eruption lasting for 61 days. Another eruption occurred in June, showcasing stunning fountains of glowing red lava, but without posing a threat ⁣to ‌any communities.

During⁤ the second eruption, visitors to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park were treated to breathtaking views of the lava flows from various vantage points.

Park spokesperson Jessica Ferracane described the scene ‌at Kīlauea overlook as “spectacular,” with a molten red lava lake and robust fountaining. It truly was a sight to behold!

In recent years, Kīlauea has had‌ a ‌history of eruptions, including a major eruption in 2018 that destroyed over ⁤700 homes. ⁣Streams of lava occasionally affected farms and homes, and the lava even reached the ocean, creating‍ dramatic interactions with the water.

In 2019, a series of earthquakes and another major eruption at Kīlauea resulted in the⁣ destruction of hundreds of homes and businesses.
