Hawley to Introduce Bill to Revoke China’s ‘Sweetheart’ Trade Status
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) is proposing to withdraw China’s permanent normal trade relations status with the United States. The bill would impose higher tariffs on Chinese imports and would allow the President to impose even higher tariffs.
China has enjoyed “most-favored-nation” (MFN) status with the United States since 2000, after joining the World Trade Organization. It has since become one of the United States’ main trade partners. Hawley claims that revoking China’s MFN status would strengthen the working class and protect American workers, citing the loss of jobs across manufacturing industries in America as evidence.
Last year, the United States withdrew Russia’s MFN status due to its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Currently, the only other countries denied this status are Cuba and North Korea. Hawley’s “Ending Normal Trade Relations With China Act of 2023” will permanently revoke China’s MFN status, whereas other proposals recommend that China seeks annual presidential approval to maintain its MFN status.
Hawley’s bill is the first relating to his “Worker’s Agenda to Rebuild America.”
