HBCU football greats back Harris-Walz on National Black Voter Day after Tony Dungy criticism – Washington Examiner
On National Black Voter Day, over 50 former football stars from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) publicly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for the 2024 presidential election. In a letter, the athletes praised Harris for her HBCU background, stating her integrity and commitment to justice and equality would benefit all Americans. The letter, signed by prominent figures including Super Bowl champions and Hall of Fame players, also encouraged voters to conduct their own research on the candidates, emphasizing the importance of informed decision-making. This support comes following criticism from former NFL coach Tony Dungy regarding Harris’s stance on abortion.

More than 50 HBCU football greats backed the ticket of Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) for the 2024 presidential election in a letter released on National Black Voter Day.
“Vice-President Harris spoke of the impact of her HBCU experience…and the leadership of talented and motivated individuals in all walks of life in communities throughout America,” the endorsement reads, according to a report. “Given her integrity, values, and demonstrated commitment to justice and equality of opportunity, we are confident that as President, she will serve the best interests of all Americans.”
At least 52 former HBCU athletes and coaches signed the letter, including two Super Bowl champions and MVPs, 10 hall of fame players, and several No. 1 overall picks.
Along with endorsing Harris, the letter encourages all voters to educate themselves on both Harris, a graduate of Howard University, and former President Donald Trump so they can make their own decisions.
“We have done so and are inspired and proud of the leadership that President Harris and Vice-President Walz will provide,” the letter reads. “But throughout our careers, we have competed on the merits, and we respect the rights of others to compete now and reach their own conclusions about candidates.”
The HBCU legends’ letter arrives a day after former Indianapolis Colts head coach and Super Bowl champion Tony Dungy criticized Harris for the vice president’s position on abortion.
Dear VP Harris: I hear you make this statement all the time. Exactly what “faith” are you talking about when you say you don’t have to abandon it to support abortion? Are you talking about the Christian faith that says all babies are made in the image of God (Gen 1:26), that God… https://t.co/Lo7v8V4wRm

“Dear VP Harris: I hear you make this statement all the time. Exactly what ‘faith’ are you talking about when you say you don’t have to abandon it to support abortion?” Dungy posted to X after Harris repeated her stance that one does not have to abandon one’s “faith” to agree that neither the government nor Trump should tell women what to do with their bodies.
“Are you talking about the Christian faith that says all babies are made in the image of God (Gen 1:26), that God places them in the womb (Jer 1:5) and that we should not take any life unjustly (Luke 18:20)?” the first Black head coach of the modern era to be inducted into the Hall of Fame added. “Are you talking about that faith or some nebulous, general ‘faith’ that says we’re good enough, and smart enough to make our own decisions? What ‘faith’ are you talking about?”
National Black Voter Day is an initiative pushed by the National Urban League and Black Entertainment Television “focused on getting Black Americans registered to vote ahead of November.”
