Mr. García has been in state custody since his arrest in 2019 at the Los Angeles International Airport, where authorities discovered an iPad containing five videos of a minor engaged in sexual activity. Last year, he pleaded guilty to two state charges of forcible oral copulation on a minor and one count of committing a lewd act on a 15-year-old child.
Prior to his arrest, García served as the third leader of La Luz del Mundo church, succeeding his father, Samuel Joaquín Flores. He was also a minister for the megachurch in Santa Ana and other cities in Southern California and Arizona until 2014.
At the time of his arrest, the church, which boasts 5 million followers worldwide, claimed that García pleaded guilty due to concerns about receiving a fair trial.
The U.S. District Attorney’s Office waited for the resolution of the state case before bringing the additional federal charges against García.
According to the federal indictment, García is charged with coercing a 16-year-old minor to engage in sexually explicit conduct and possessing videos found on his iPad.
If convicted of both federal charges, García could face a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in federal prison for producing child pornography, and a maximum sentence of 10 years for possessing child pornography.
“The penalties in federal court are quite severe for this,” said spokesman Ciaran McEvoy.
A judge will determine whether García will serve the federal sentence concurrently or in addition to his state sentence.
