Heisman Trophy winner’s $5M ‘bender’ led to suicide attempt after NFL team cut.

A Former Football ⁣Star’s Darkest Moments: Johnny Manziel’s Untold Story

In a gripping episode of Netflix’s “Untold” set to release on Tuesday, former college football phenomenon Johnny Manziel opens up about his tumultuous⁢ journey and ‌the struggles ‍that ⁤led him to attempt ⁣suicide in 2016. After being released from the Cleveland Browns, Manziel’s life took a dark turn, and he reveals his battle with bipolar disorder, which ⁣was diagnosed the same‌ year.

Describing the aftermath of his unsuccessful stint with the Browns, Manziel says, “The ride was over. I couldn’t fix what I had done with the NFL, with [Texas] A&M,‍ everything.” The weight ‍of his failures and the stigma associated ⁢with ⁤his mental health condition pushed him to the brink.

Fortunately, Manziel’s suicide attempt was unsuccessful‍ when the ‌handgun he used failed to fire. Reflecting on his actions, ⁤he admits that his ⁤spending spree leading up to the attempt was a way to justify his decision to himself. The experience made him realize that⁢ it was merely an excuse ⁤and an escape.

During his post-release bender, Manziel’s‍ weight dropped significantly, going from 215 to ⁣175 pounds. He turned to drugs like cocaine and ⁤Oxycontin ⁢to cope with his emotional turmoil.

The failed suicide attempt became a‌ turning point for Manziel, prompting him to leave his Los Angeles residence and return to Texas‍ to⁢ live with his family. Despite the‌ setbacks, his remarkable college career, ‌which earned him the Heisman Trophy, had sparked interest in his NFL potential. However, concerns about his character caused him to slip in the 2014 ‌NFL Draft.

In⁤ a promotional‍ video for “Untold,” released in July, “Johnny Football”⁢ hints at his wild partying lifestyle, setting the stage for the untold story that will be revealed in the upcoming episode.

Despite his⁤ troubled⁣ past, Manziel ‍is now looking to the future. He plans to open “Johnny Manziel’s ‌Money Bar”⁤ in ‍College Station, Texas, as he pivots beyond football. ⁤However, he hasn’t completely left the game‌ behind. Manziel is set to compete with the Zappers⁣ of the Fan Controlled Football League⁢ in their ‌2024 season.

Johnny⁣ Manziel’s journey serves‌ as a reminder ‍that even in the face⁢ of darkness,⁢ there is ⁣hope for redemption and a chance to rewrite⁤ one’s story.
