If both chambers of Congress fail to agree on a continuing resolution before October 1, a government shutdown will occur, resulting in furloughs or unpaid work for hundreds of thousands of federal workers. The last government shutdown took place in December 2018 and lasted for 35 days, concluding in January 2019.
A government shutdown would entail the closure of numerous federal agencies, except for essential services. Those required to work during the shutdown would do so without receiving pay until the government reopens. However, members of Congress would still receive their pay as it is constitutionally mandated.
