Here’s Everything Wrong With New Mexico’s Incredibly Dangerous New Election Law

New Mexico Governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham recently signed into law one of the most concerning election bills, known as the New Mexico Voting Rights Act. The Democrat-signed bill extends their political influence and backs up plans to alter the election policies of several blue states. As previously noted, the Democrats’ hopes have been the federalization of state elections through their failed HR 1 bill. With ‘New Mexico Voting Rights Act,’ Democrats aim to make similar changes in individual states, including those where they have full control of their government, as seen in New Mexico.

Here’s a rundown of what the bill states.

Automatic Voter Registration

Starting in 2025, anyone who applies for a driver’s license in New Mexico is automatically registered to vote, as well as in other public offices designated by the Secretary of State. Critics of the move say that it puts undue pressure on those applying for federal or state benefits to align with their preferred political or candidate position. Additionally, the chance of accidentally granting the right to vote to non-citizen residents has significantly increased. New Mexico, like Colorado, allows non-citizens to obtain driver’s licenses, and over 31,000 foreign nationals received voter registration mailers prior to the 2022 mid-terms.

Carla Sonntag, CEO, and founder of New Mexico Business Coalition and Better Together reiterated that “This mandate significantly increases the likelihood of non-U.S. citizens being registered to vote.”
