Naval Academy students study gender and sexuality.
Can Gender and Sexuality Theory Enhance Navy Sailors’ Effectiveness?
The U.S. Naval Academy believes that being well-versed in gender and sexuality theory can indeed make a difference. In fact, they are actively seeking to hire a specialist in Gender and Sexuality Studies for a tenure-track position, as stated on their website.
The chosen professor will be responsible for teaching a course that brings Naval cadets up to date on LGBTQ, women’s, and gender studies. The course description, available on the Naval Academy’s website, highlights the use of focused readings to explore theories, histories, perspectives, and major figures in these fields.
Some of the authors that may be included in the course readings are Audre Lorde, Sarah Ahmed, Kimberle Crenshaw, and Gloria Anzaldua. These authors represent a diverse range of perspectives and are known for their contributions to woke academic theories.
Sarah Ahmed, a contemporary feminist professor, focuses on the intersection between sexuality, race, and feminism. Her book, “The Feminist Killjoy Handbook,” argues that challenging offensive jokes and sexist comments can be a radical act of world-making.
Gloria Anzaldua, a Chicana dyke-feminist, explores the intersections of gender, race, and colonialism in her writings. She has been open about her sexual fantasies involving various relationships, including those with family members and animals.
Audre Lorde, a black lesbian poet and activist, has made significant contributions to civil rights, anti-war, and feminist movements. Her poetry collection, “The Black Unicorn,” draws on African mythologies to delve into questions of gender, sexuality, racial identity, pride, and motherhood.
Kimberle Crenshaw, a Critical Race Theory scholar and lawyer, coined the term “intersectionality.” This concept is widely used to analyze privilege and discrimination by considering how different forms of inequality intersect and exacerbate each other.
The Biden administration has been promoting woke themes throughout the federal government, including the military. This emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion has influenced various aspects of government operations, such as recruitment campaigns and educational courses.
The Naval Academy defends its Gender and Sexuality course, stating that it aims to develop well-rounded future leaders in the Navy and Marine Corps by fostering respect and inclusion. The Academy emphasizes critical thinking and the ability to analyze issues from multiple perspectives.
In addition to the Gender and Sexuality course, the Naval Academy’s English Department also offers a course on Latinx Studies, exploring identity formation through various facets such as class, race, gender, sexuality, and language.
It’s important to note that as a taxpayer, you fund the Naval Academy’s educational programs, covering tuition, room, and board for cadets.
