2024 GOP Candidates’ Reactions to Trump’s Miami Arrest
Trump Arrested on Federal Charges
Former President Donald Trump, the leading Republican candidate for 2024, was arrested on Tuesday on federal charges related to the alleged mishandling of classified documents.
Trump is currently ahead of the rest of the GOP pack, with a significant lead in the polls. According to recent polls, he has 53 percent support among GOP voters, while the second-place candidate, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, only has 23 percent. No other candidate has reached 5 percent.
Public Denouncements and Defense
Vivek Ramaswamy and radio host Larry Elder publicly denounced Trump’s arrest. Ramaswamy defended Trump, stating that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is using “police state” tactics. He criticized the GOP “donor class” for pressuring Republican candidates to distance themselves from Trump.
Elder, on the other hand, pledged to drop the politically-motivated charges against Trump if elected. He questioned the double standard in the treatment of Trump compared to Hillary Clinton and President Biden.
DeSantis’ Response
Gov. Ron DeSantis has remained largely silent on Trump’s arrest but suggested a double standard in the justice system. He emphasized the need for one standard of justice for all and criticized the weaponization of state power against certain factions.
DeSantis also acknowledged that he would have faced severe consequences if he had mishandled classified documents during his time as a Naval officer.
Criticism from Former Allies
Former Vice President Mike Pence, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, and Sen. Tim Scott have expressed their willingness to criticize Trump after his arrest. Haley even stated that she would likely pardon Trump if he is convicted, considering what is best for the country.
Pence, while not defending the allegations against Trump, emphasized the importance of allowing him to have his day in court and present a defense.
