Hiding Biden: Joe’s Super Bowl snub the latest example of White House’s reelection strategy

President Joe Biden is not sitting down for an interview at the Super Bowl for the second year in a row, as he continues his trend of limited interviews and media appearances.

The White House confirmed to Variety over the weekend that the president would not take part in an interview with CBS, which airs the Super Bowl domestically this year, after skipping out on an interview with Fox before its broadcast of the 2023 Super Bowl.

“We hope viewers enjoy watching what they tuned in for — the game,” White House spokesman Ben LaBolt said.

Biden participated in Super Bowl interviews with CBS and NBC ahead of the big game in 2021 and 2022, respectively. The interview has become a recent tradition in the 21st century, with then-President Donald Trump’s decision not to participate in an interview with NBC in 2018 being the most recent snub prior to Biden’s back-to-back snubs.

The decision not to sit down for an interview prior to the Super Bowl, which has been viewed by roughly 100 million people domestically in recent years, comes as Biden continues to do more limited media appearances ahead of the November election.

During his presidency, Biden has done fewer interviews than his recent predecessors and has taken interviews on unconventional platforms.

In 2023, Biden did interviews on The Drew Barrymore Show, the SiriusXM podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, and the Weather Channel. He did do some sit-downs with CBS News’s 60 Minutes and other news programs as well.

In his successful 2020 presidential campaign, he did a “basement campaign” with limited physical appearances, opting instead to do remote gatherings and limited media appearances. The move was done as a result of lockdowns and social distancing at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, but some believe a successful strategy could be returning in some form.

The 2024 Super Bowl will air on CBS on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. EST. The game will see the Kansas City Chiefs attempt to win their second consecutive Super Bowl and their fourth overall.
