Hillary Clinton Hopes Drag Show Bans Go ‘The Way Of The Dinosaur’
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed her dismay over the potential of restrictions on drag performances in certain states. She hopes that limits on drag shows will become obsolete, the same way as dinosaurs.
During the opening night of “Bob Fosse’s Dancin’” on Broadway, a reporter from The New York Times caught up with Clinton and asked her about a show such as “Some Like It Hot,” which could potentially face bans in some states. In this film, the male leads dress up as women to join an all-female band and hide from the mob after witnessing a murder.
Clinton stated that “It’s a very sad commentary on what people think is important in our country. I hope that it goes the way of the dinosaur because people will recognize that it’s just a political stunt.”
The New York Times specifically noted a new law in Tennessee that places restrictions on “cabaret” performances aimed at protect children from sexually suggestive drag shows. This is part of a recent wave of action by conservative lawmakers to prevent minors from being able to attend drag performances.
Clinton surmised that if such “absurd” restrictions continue, it could extend to performances from literary legends such as William Shakespeare, and she questioned whether these actions would lead to the prohibition of exporting entertainment.
In 2020, Clinton made headlines for making an appearance on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen” in an episode that featured a “Give Them Hill” pageant featuring drag queens who dressed up as Clinton at different stages of her life.
