Actor forced to sell $1.4M house due to financial struggles: ‘I’m furious’
Actor Billy Porter Forced to Sell $1.4M Home Amid Hollywood Strike
Renowned actor Billy Porter recently revealed that he is being forced to sell his luxurious $1.4 million home in Long Island, New York due to the ongoing Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strike. In an interview with the U.K.’s Evening Standard, Porter expressed his frustration about the impact of the strike on his life.
“I don’t know when we’re gonna go back [to work],” Porter lamented. “The life of an artist, until you make f***-you money — which I haven’t made yet — is still check-to-check.”
Despite his anger, Porter shared that he is currently finding solace in England as the strike continues. The Daily Mail reported that Porter purchased the New York home in October 2020, and its value has now skyrocketed to over $2.3 million.
The Emmy-winning actor also revealed that his career plans have been derailed by the strike. “I was supposed to be in a new movie and on a new television show starting in September. None of that is happening,” he said.
Public Reaction
However, not everyone has been sympathetic towards Porter’s financial situation. Several Twitter users criticized his predicament, with one user questioning the size of his home and another pointing out that selling a million-dollar house still means owning a house.
The general public is trying to feed their families and keep their light on. Welcome to the real world. Just how large is this home of his ?

Selling an expensive house to buy a less still expensive house is still OWNING any house. This a bit tone deaf

Despite the criticism, Porter previously described his home as a place where he found happiness. In an interview with Condé Nast Traveller, he mentioned that the house sat on an acre of land and was just a short walk from the beach.
The Strike and Its Impact
The ongoing writers’ strike, which began in May, has caused disruptions in the entertainment industry. Some shows have halted production, and networks have resorted to airing reality shows and reruns. In July, actors also joined the strike after failing to secure a deal.
The strike revolves around the demand for higher residuals for streaming services and protection against the increasing use of artificial intelligence in the industry. The last time both writers and actors went on strike together was in 1960.
While the strike shows no signs of ending, the Emmy Awards have already been rescheduled to January 15, 2024, from their original September date.
Despite the challenges he faces, Porter remains determined to navigate through this difficult period in his career.
