Homan ‘to partner up’ with Abbott after fights with Biden

Former Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Tom Homan promised a partnership with Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) after four years of battling the Biden administration’s immigration policies.

Since President-elect Donald Trump selected Homan to be his border czar, one of his first actions before the new administration takes over is a trip to the southern border in Texas. Abbott will escort him as the start of what Homan described as a partnering up between the state’s government and the new administration.

“Gov. Abbott has done a great job so far. Look, illegal crossings in Texas is down over 80% because of great work by Gov. Abbott. And he has been successful because he has taken the Trump policies and put them to work. He has put the border barriers and walls up. Walls work. President Trump proved that. He has consequences. He’s arresting people and charging them across the border. Consequences work,” Homan said on Fox News’s Fox and Friends Tuesday.

“We’re going to build upon the success,” he said. “I guarantee you the Trump administration isn’t going to constantly sue him for trying to secure the border. We’re going to partner up and help him do 100% security on this border. And we’re going to do that across the southwest border.”

Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that the federal government has the constitutional power to remove barbed wire on the state’s territory after the Department of Justice sued the Texas government for its various tactics to keep immigrants from illegally entering.

While the Border Patrol has been instructed by the Biden administration to take down the barbed-wire fences, the Texas National Guard is continuing to install more fences. In response, Abbott filed a lawsuit against the Justice Department, and a panel of judges has barred agents from destroying more fencing. Federal agents are generally protected from lawsuits when performing their duties, but this lawsuit centers on what a Border Patrol agent’s duty is.

Abbott launched his border security operation shortly after President Joe Biden took office. This operation resulted in 526,600 apprehensions of illegal immigrants by local law enforcement and more than 48,700 criminal arrests, which included 41,900 felony charges as of last week.
