Mayorkas proud of abandoning ‘Illegal Alien’ label.
Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas Rejects Use of “Illegal Alien”
In a recent interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas made a bold statement. He announced that he has directed his agency to avoid using the term “illegal alien” when referring to foreign nationals who enter the United States illegally.
“In the Department of Homeland Security, I issued a memo very early on that we would not use the term ‘illegal alien.’ When speaking of these individuals, we use the term ‘non-citizen,’ and that speaks to the importance of respecting the dignity of the individual,” Mayorkas remarked.
This decision by Mayorkas comes at a time when illegal immigration has seen a significant increase under the Biden administration. Since President Biden took office in 2021, an estimated 1.5 million illegal immigrants have managed to enter the country, surpassing the total reported gotaways during the previous three years under the Trump administration.
Furthermore, Border Patrol has reported a staggering 1,000% increase in illegal immigration from various countries, including China, Afghanistan, Algeria, Egypt, and Ethiopia, among others, from fiscal year 2022 to fiscal year 2023.
While the surge in illegal crossings poses a threat to American citizens living on the border, the Biden administration has introduced the CBP One app, a digital platform that allows foreign nationals to schedule asylum claim meetings remotely. This has resulted in nearly 80,000 foreign nationals entering the United States between January and April.

Major cities, such as Chicago and New York City, have struggled to accommodate the influx of foreign nationals under the Biden administration.
Moreover, illegal immigration has proven to be a significant financial burden on United States taxpayers, costing approximately $151 billion annually. A recent report from Republicans on the House Homeland Security Committee revealed that it also places a substantial strain on the American medical system.
A CBS News poll conducted in late May showed that 63% of Americans disapprove of President Biden’s handling of the United States border, while only 37% approve.
