February 6, 2024 – 7:24 AM PST

WASHINGTON ‌(Reuters)‌ – In a major announcement today, Honda Motor Co revealed that it is recalling 750,000 ⁢vehicles in the United States over a concerning defect involving ⁤air bags.‌ The company has⁢ discovered that these air bags⁣ could deploy unintentionally during a ⁤crash, posing a serious safety ⁢risk to drivers and passengers.

The National Highway ⁣Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified that the‍ front passenger‌ seat weight sensor may crack and short circuit, leading to the air bag failing to suppress as intended. To address this issue, Honda dealers will be replacing the seat weight sensors.

This recall affects certain Honda ⁤Pilot, Accord, and Civic vehicles from the 2020-2022 model years, ‍as well as some Honda CR-V and Passport vehicles from ⁢the 2020 and 2021 model years.

In ‍a⁣ statement ‌filed with the safety regulator, Honda disclosed that there have been 3,834 warranty claims related to‍ this issue. However, the company‌ reassured the public that there have been no reports of injuries or deaths associated with the recall problem‌ since⁤ June 2020.

Providing insight into the origin of the defect, Honda explained to the ‍NHTSA that a natural disaster had impacted the manufacturing plant ⁣of a‌ subcontractor. As⁤ a result, a supplier temporarily changed the base material in the‌ printed circuit board of the seat weight sensor. Unfortunately, this ⁢alternative material used “could allow additional strain ‍to the⁤ printed circuit ⁢board,” ‍according ⁢to Honda.

This recall comes shortly after Toyota Motor’s recall of 1.12 million vehicles worldwide in December due to a similar issue⁤ with air bags not deploying as designed.⁢ Additionally, Honda itself recalled 4.5 ⁢million vehicles worldwide, including 2.54 million vehicles in the United States, in‌ December over⁣ concerns of fuel pump failure.
