Honda recalls 750K US vehicles due to air bag defect
Breaking News: Honda Recalls 750,000 Vehicles in the US Due to Air Bag Defect
February 6, 2024 – 7:24 AM PST
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – In a major announcement today, Honda Motor Co revealed that it is recalling 750,000 vehicles in the United States over a concerning defect involving air bags. The company has discovered that these air bags could deploy unintentionally during a crash, posing a serious safety risk to drivers and passengers.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified that the front passenger seat weight sensor may crack and short circuit, leading to the air bag failing to suppress as intended. To address this issue, Honda dealers will be replacing the seat weight sensors.
This recall affects certain Honda Pilot, Accord, and Civic vehicles from the 2020-2022 model years, as well as some Honda CR-V and Passport vehicles from the 2020 and 2021 model years.
In a statement filed with the safety regulator, Honda disclosed that there have been 3,834 warranty claims related to this issue. However, the company reassured the public that there have been no reports of injuries or deaths associated with the recall problem since June 2020.
Providing insight into the origin of the defect, Honda explained to the NHTSA that a natural disaster had impacted the manufacturing plant of a subcontractor. As a result, a supplier temporarily changed the base material in the printed circuit board of the seat weight sensor. Unfortunately, this alternative material used “could allow additional strain to the printed circuit board,” according to Honda.
This recall comes shortly after Toyota Motor’s recall of 1.12 million vehicles worldwide in December due to a similar issue with air bags not deploying as designed. Additionally, Honda itself recalled 4.5 million vehicles worldwide, including 2.54 million vehicles in the United States, in December over concerns of fuel pump failure.

Why is it important for automakers to have robust supply chains and collaborative efforts with suppliers to mitigate the impact of natural disasters on the manufacturing process
Motor Co also faced a recall of 1.4 million vehicles in January 2023 due to a malfunctioning fuel pump.
The safety of vehicle occupants is a top priority for automakers, and recalls are a necessary measure to ensure that any potential defects are addressed promptly. It is commendable that Honda has taken proactive steps to identify and rectify the air bag defect before any accidents or injuries occur. By issuing this recall, Honda is demonstrating its commitment to the safety and well-being of its customers.
Owners of affected vehicles should be notified by mail and are advised to contact their local Honda dealer to schedule a service appointment. The seat weight sensor will be replaced free of charge, ensuring that the air bags function as intended and minimize the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
It is worth noting that Honda has experienced a significant increase in warranty claims related to this issue, highlighting the importance of thorough testing and quality control processes in the manufacturing of automotive components. Manufacturers must continue to prioritize the safety and reliability of their products, especially when it comes to critical components such as air bags.
The impact of natural disasters on the supply chain and manufacturing process is a reminder of the challenges faced by the automotive industry. Automakers need to maintain a robust and resilient supply chain to mitigate the risk of such disruptions. Collaborative efforts between manufacturers and suppliers are necessary to ensure that any changes or substitutions in materials are thoroughly evaluated and meet the required specifications and standards.
In summary, Honda’s recall of 750,000 vehicles in the United States due to an air bag defect is a significant event in the automotive industry. It underscores the importance of continuous monitoring and proactive identification of potential safety issues. Honda’s swift action to address this problem and replace the faulty seat weight sensors demonstrates its commitment to customer safety and satisfaction. Vehicle owners should take immediate action and contact their local Honda dealer to arrange for the necessary repairs to ensure the proper functioning of their air bags.
