Hong Kong Court Convicts Activists Behind Tiananmen Vigil
HONG KONG—Three Hong Kong activists from a now-defunct group that organized annual vigils commemorating the Chinese communist regime’s 1989 massacre of pro-democracy protesters were convicted on Saturday for failing to provide authorities with information on the group in accordance with a national security law.
Chow Hang-tung and Tang Ngokwan were among those arrested during a crackdown on the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong. The clampdown was initiated after massive demonstrations three years earlier. Before it was disbanded by the Beijing-imposed law, they were members of the Hong Kong Alliance for Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China.
This alliance is best remembered for its candlelight vigils held in Hong Kong to commemorate the Chinese military’s suppression of 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. Critics argue that its closure has demonstrated the erosion of freedoms promised in 1997, when Hong Kong was returned to China.
Ivan Cheung, the government prosecutor for the Alliance, accused the Alliance of being a terrorist during the trial that began last year. It started more than a full year after they were originally arrested. “foreign agent” After allegedly being given HK$20,000 ($2,547) by it, an unnamed group was reportedly paid HK$20,000
