House Chairman: $6B Biden Unfreeze Funds for Iran Linked to Terrorism and Nuclear Ambitions.
House Foreign Affairs Chairman: Unfreezing Iranian Assets Will Fund “Terror Operations” and “Nuclear Bomb Aspirations”
House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) expressed concerns over the weekend regarding the Biden Administration’s plan to unfreeze $6 billion of Iranian assets. According to McCaul, this move will provide financial support for Iran’s “terror operations” and their pursuit of a nuclear bomb.
During an interview with Fox News host Shannon Bream on “Fox News Sunday,” McCaul discussed various issues in the Middle East, including the funding being sent to Afghanistan by the Biden Administration.
The reported prisoner swap with Iran not only involves the release of detained Americans but also includes the freedom of Iranian criminals who have evaded sanctions imposed against Iran, known as the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.
As per a report from The New York Times, the United States plans to transfer nearly $6 billion of Iran’s assets in South Korea to an account in the central bank of Qatar. Qatar will have control over the funds and will only allow Iran to access the money for “humanitarian purchases,” according to sources cited by the Times.
The Americans will only be permitted to leave once the funds have been transferred to the Qatari account. They will be flown to Doha, the capital city of Qatar, as the country played a crucial role in negotiating the arrangement.
McCaul dismissed the notion that the Ayatollah would not have control over the money, deeming it ludicrous. He argued that the funds would ultimately support Iran’s proxy war, terror operations, and their nuclear ambitions.
“They are now starting to talk about the JCPOA all over again, which in my judgment, will lead us down a course to a legal nuclear bomb in Iran,” McCaul warned. “Prime Minister Netanyahu came out strongly against this. I think we’re going back to the mistakes of the past.”
McCaul also expressed concern over the special envoy to Iran, who is currently under investigation for mishandling classified information. As the top negotiator with Iran, this individual possesses highly sensitive information and the investigation raises troubling questions.
