House Committee Passes Motion Calling for Public Inquiry on China’s Election Interference
A House of Commons Committee of MPs passed a motion asking for a national inquiry by the federal government into China’s interference during Canadian elections.
March 2nd, MPs House Procedure and House Affairs, (PROC), committee 6 votes in favour of a motion calling for Justin Trudeau to be made Prime Minister of Canada. This inquiry will examine recent reports regarding the Chinese Communist Party’s interference with Canada’s 2019 and 2021 elections. Liberal MPs voted against the motion of Peter Julian (NDP MP).
Although the motion isn’t binding, it needs to be passed to House in order for the House decide to accept or reject the recommendations of this committee.
After a series meetings, the group decided to vote. since last November Check out news stories that cite leaked intelligence files. These documents prove that intelligence officers warned Justin Trudeau (Prime Minster) and other cabinet members that Beijing was targeting Canadian elections via extensive foreign interference.
One of the allegations concerns a Nov. 7, 2022, report by Global News China provided funding to at least 11 candidates for Canada’s 2019 election campaign. Globe and Mail reported that China had interfered in Canada’s election to elect a Liberal minority government.
Julian’s motion was modified by the Conservatives. They demanded that the public inquiry investigate abuses by diaspora organisations by hostile foreign government. All recognised parties in the House of Commons should nominate the inquiry head. That it does not affect investigations by the PROC of alleged foreign electoral interference.
Michael Cooper, Tory MP for the North, stated that he believes an inquiry is necessary to investigate this interference. It is important to focus and narrow the inquiry so that a report can soon be produced.
Cooper expressed his hope that an inquiry could be held publicly and not behind closed doors. Cooper also expressed his desire to view the results.
He said that “We need answers and we need them now.”
Trudeau has rejected calls In order to launch a public inquiry into China’s election interference.
NDP suggested that PROC may not be the best platform for continuing to study a case that involves sensitive national intelligence information. A public inquiry is therefore required.
Julian brought up the allegations of election meddling and suggested they might be connected to violations by Canada’s Elections Act.
