House conservatives refuse Biden’s Ukraine funding request, calling it a ‘nonstarter’.
Conservative Republicans Reject Biden’s Request for Increased Funding for Ukraine
President Joe Biden’s request for additional funding for Ukraine and other military assistance is facing opposition from conservative Republicans in the House. They are dismissing the effort as nonnegotiable.
Biden unveiled his highly anticipated request on Thursday, urging Congress to approve an extra $24 billion to support Ukraine’s ongoing battle against the Russian government’s invasion. The request includes $13 billion for security assistance and $7.3 billion for economic and humanitarian efforts. However, House Republicans, who have been cautious about providing more economic aid to the wartorn country, are gearing up for a battle.
Republicans Stand Firm Against the Request
“No. This should be a non-starter for the House GOP,” stated Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX). “It’s time to stand up for Americans and against the uniparty.”
The funding proposal also seeks $12 billion for disaster relief and $3.3 billion to assist countries affected by the Russian invasion. Additionally, $4 billion would be allocated for U.S. border security, bringing the total request to $40 billion.
While the request is expected to receive some bipartisan support in the House, with several Republicans publicly expressing their desire to continue funding Ukraine’s war effort, at least one senior GOP member doubts that Republicans have enough votes to pass the Ukraine supplemental without Democratic assistance.
“We still don’t have an accurate accounting of the $113 billion we have already sent to Ukraine,” said Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT). “With the disaster that is taking place on our southern border, why are we even considering this?”
This sentiment is echoed among GOP voters, as recent polling from the Brookings Institution shows a decrease in Republican support for providing financial assistance to Ukraine. Only 28% of Republicans compared to 62% of Democrats support increased aid.
On the other hand, House Democrats are likely to support the legislation, with several members already commending Biden for his efforts to assist Ukraine while also addressing the flow of fentanyl across the southern border.
“We applaud the Administration for putting forward a supplemental funding request that addresses each of these important issues facing our nation,” said Rep. Annie Kuster (D-NH). “Now, Congress must get it across the finish line.”
It remains uncertain whether House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) will bring the proposal to the floor for a vote. Earlier this year, McCarthy vowed that any Ukraine-related funding must go through the regular appropriations process rather than a supplemental aid request.
