House discusses 3 resolutions supporting law enforcement.
The U.S. House of Representatives Honors National Police Week with Three Pro-Law Enforcement Resolutions
The U.S. House of Representatives has agreed to vote on three resolutions in observance of National Police Week. These bills aim to support law enforcement officers and condemn efforts to defund or dismantle police departments.
The Three Resolutions
- HR 2494: Makes assaulting a law enforcement officer a deportable offense for illegal aliens
- HR 3091: Allows federal law enforcement officers to purchase their service weapons at retirement
- CR 40: Expresses gratitude for local law enforcement while condemning efforts to defund or dismantle police departments
During the debate, House Democrats criticized the language in CR 40, claiming that it excluded federal law enforcement officers. Rep. James McGovern (D-Mass.) said that Republicans only support some of the police and accused them of slighting federal law enforcement.
However, Rep. Michelle Fischbach (R-Minn.) countered that several Democrats backed the “defund the police” movement that grew out of the 2020 George Floyd protests. She accused the other side of playing “word games” to draw attention away from that fact.
Qualified immunity, the legal principle that protects government officials, including the police, from being sued for actions taken during their regular duties, was also a topic of discussion.
Despite the debate, the U.S. House of Representatives remains committed to honoring National Police Week and supporting law enforcement officers across the country.
