House Democrats introduced a bill on Friday to rename a federal prison after Donald Trump, just days after Republicans in the lower chamber proposed renaming a Washington, D.C., airport after the former president.
Reps. Gerry Connolly (D-VA), John Garamendi (D-CA), and Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) introduced legislation to designate the Miami Federal Correctional Institution in Florida as the “Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution.”
“Everyone knows President Trump loves to write his name in gold letters on all his buildings,” Moskowitz said in a statement. “But he’s never had his name on a federal building before and as a public servant I just want to help the former president. Help us make that dream a reality.”
The bill to rename the Miami federal prison comes three days after legislation, led by House Chief Deputy Whip Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA), was introduced to change the name of Washington Dulles International Airport to the Donald J. Trump International Airport.
“When our Republican colleagues introduced their bill to rename Dulles after Donald Trump, I said the more fitting option would be to rename a federal prison,” Connolly said in a statement, pointing to the former president’s 88 felony counts that he faces across four criminal cases.
“I hope our Republican friends will join us in bestowing upon Donald J. Trump the only honor he truly deserves,” the Pennsylvania Democrat added.
Garamendi said he cannot think of a “more fitting tribute” to Trump than “renaming the closest federal prison to Mar-a-Lago in his honor.”

“As always, my Democratic colleagues and I remain willing to work with anyone on commonsense solutions to real world problems,” Garamendi said.
Reschenthaler’s office had not responded to a request for comment by press time.
