House Freedom Caucus gives Johnson warning after helping him secure speaker gavel

The hard-line conservative House Freedom Caucus sent a warning to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) after he narrowly avoided being voted down by some caucus members from retaining the gavel Friday.

The letter, signed by 11 members and including Reps. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and Chip Roy (R-TX), who did not originally vote for Johnson, said they voted for him in the end “because of our steadfast support of President Trump and to ensure the timely certification of his electors.”

“We did this despite our sincere reservations regarding the Speaker’s track record over the past 15 months,” the letter said.

“Now, Speaker Johnson must prove he will not fail to enact President Trump’s bold agenda,” it continued.

Four of the 11 caucus members initially remained quiet when their names were called in the vote for Speaker. When called again after all members had called, they all voted for Johnson. However one member, Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC), voted for Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH). After being pulled into a huddle with Johnson, and a reported phone call with President-elect Donald Trump, Norman changed his vote to Johnson.

The letter, released less than an hour after the final vote was decided, called for Johnson to “modify the House calendar” to mimic that of the Senate, which will be in session five days a week.

The letter also called upon Johnson to advance legislation regarding various promises Trump made on the campaign trail, including securing the southern border to stop illegal immigration while also enacting border security reforms, cutting spending to reduce the deficit, and creating a path to balancing the budget.

They also called for the reversal of several of President Joe Biden’s policies like student loan forgiveness.

In addition to Biggs, Roy, and Norman, the list of signatories of the letter include Reps. Eric Burlison (R-MO), Michael Cloud (R-TX), Andrew Clyde (R-GA), Eli Crane (R-AZ), Clay Higgins (R-LA), Andy Ogles (R-TN), and Scott Perry (R-PA).
