House GOP demands Mayorkas provide info on illegal immigrant charged with Georgia student’s murder
House Republicans Demand Information on Murder of Georgia Nursing Student
House Republicans are demanding that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas provide information on the illegal immigrant charged with murdering Georgia nursing student Laken Riley.
Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement Chairman Tom McClintock (R-CA) sent a letter to Mayorkas on Tuesday as the secretary faces the prospect of a Senate trial after the GOP-led House impeached him over the handling of the border crisis.
“Criminal aliens exploit vulnerabilities in our nation’s immigration system to the detriment of those in the United States,” the lawmakers wrote. “The Biden Administration’s border and immigration policies only increase the likelihood that criminal aliens will successfully enter and remain in the U.S.”
Authorities detained Ibarra after Riley, a 22-year-old student at Augusta University, was found dead last week at the University of Georgia in Athens with signs of blunt force trauma. Police suspect it was a “crime of opportunity” as the two did not appear to know each other. Ibarra now faces charges for murder, assault, and more in connection to the killing. He has been denied bond.
Jordan and McClintock referred to a statement from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that said Ibarra was arrested by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in September 2022 after an illegal crossing near El Paso, Texas, and was paroled and released “for further processing.”
ICE said Ibarra was then arrested by New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers in September 2023 and charged with acting in a manner to injure a child less than 17 and a motor vehicle license violation. ICE said Ibarra was released by the NYPD before a detainer could be issued.
The statement from ICE concluded by saying its field office in Atlanta “encountered Ibarra pursuant to his arrest” by the University of Georgia Police Department and being charged with murder and other crimes. It added that the Atlanta field office lodged a detainer.
Jordan and McClintock said they want case history information on Ibarra, details on all of Ibarra’s entries into the United States, information about Ibarra’s processing by CBP officials, and whether ICE lodged an immigration detainer against him. They set a deadline of 5 p.m. on March 12.

How will the Biden Administration rectify the failures in the immigration system that have put the lives of innocent Americans at risk
Emain in our country, putting Americans at risk.”
Riley, a 21-year-old nursing student at Dalton State College, was found dead in her apartment on March 18. An illegal immigrant from El Salvador, Cristian Alvarado, was arrested and charged with her murder. Alvarado had previously been apprehended by Border Patrol agents in Texas in May 2020 but was released into the United States pending his immigration court hearing.
The Republican lawmakers outlined several questions they want answered by Mayorkas, including how many criminal illegal immigrants have been released into the country since President Biden took office, and how many had previously been in the custody of immigration enforcement agencies.
“It is imperative that we understand why Mr. Alvarado was not detained and promptly removed from the United States after his initial apprehension, and why he was released to commit further crimes against three innocent victims,” the letter states.
The lawmakers also requested information on the policies and procedures followed by immigration agencies, and how these have changed under the Biden Administration. They expressed concerns about the cancellation of the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) and the halt on deportations, noting that these changes create opportunities for criminal elements to exploit the system.
“We have repeatedly requested information on the number of detained criminals that your department has released since January 20, 2021, but to date, we have not received any responses,” the letter continues.
The murder of Laken Riley has garnered national attention and has fueled the debate on border security and immigration policies. At a time when the Biden Administration is facing scrutiny over their handling of the border crisis, this tragedy highlights the consequences of lax immigration enforcement.
House Republicans are determined to hold the Biden Administration accountable for their immigration policies and the impact it has on the safety and security of American citizens. They are urging Secretary Mayorkas to provide the requested information as part of their congressional oversight responsibilities.
The letter concludes with a call for transparency and action: “We expect answers to our questions without delay, and we further request your immediate commitment to rectifying the failures in our immigration system that have put the lives of innocent Americans at risk.”
As the debate on immigration reform continues, the tragic murder of Laken Riley serves as a grim reminder of the importance of border security and effective immigration enforcement. It is crucial that the Biden Administration address these concerns and take swift action to protect the lives and well-being of the American people.
