House GOP revels in Biden’s DC crime bill flip-flop that infuriated Democrats
HThe Republicans of ouse are winning the victory lap. all-but-certain passage constituents of GOP legislation that aims to block Washington, D.C.’s controversial criminal code changes, and revelling in particular how President Joe Biden’s reversed position on the matter blindsided many House Democrats.
Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-GA, will lead the Senate in approving the resolution Wednesday night. Biden will then sign it. After initially opposing the resolution, President Obama changed his mind after all House Democrats had voted against it. Senate Democrats are expected to support the bill, as they prepare to use public safety in 2024 as a wedge issue.
According to one GOP lawmaker, Washington Examiner Members were present at the closed-door House Republicans conference on Wednesday. “chuckling that Biden opposed the D.C. crime bill vote and Dems felt pressured to oppose … and now Biden flipped and supports.”

At a later press conference, the GOP leadership celebrated the win and noted that Democrats were largely against the resolution at the House’s passage last month.
Steve Scalise, the House Majority Leader (Republican from Louisiana), argued that if the Washington criminal code overhaul had been implemented, it would have increased the public safety crisis in the city. It would have eliminated a significant portion of the mandatory minimum sentences for violent crime and restored jury trials for misdemeanors.
